Scanner Reports 1-1-14
updated: Jan 01, 2014, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Happy New Year. First Day of the Year, Hump Day. I'm not a New Year's Celebrator anymore. I usually conk out before Midnight these days. For many years I worked all the time late into the night and sometimes all night I guess I burned myself out. I remember about 20 or so years ago celebrating the Eve, I was out driving just before midnight, that's a bad time to be out driving don't ever try it at home or anywhere else. I had lost track of time I was on East Cota driving behind a police car passing Olive Street when the clock struck 12. Fireworks and Gunshots went off everywhere. I don't know if the cop was on a call or what but he sped up a bit and so did I. I was actually looking for a place to park and hide there were a lot of shots fired that night that's one of my most notable New Year's Eve Experiences in Santa Barbara. I thought I was going to get shot or hit with a rocket.

Nowadays I focus more on trying to make it to the First of the year when it comes to New Year's each year, I don't know why. Maybe because of that experience, I pretty much forget about New Year's Resolutions the first Day of the year. I do have a couple this year but they are not the traditional resolutions. To listen to more music and recycle more, I collect CD's and have quite a collection of music. Sometimes when I should be listening to music and getting out of my HEAD I don't. It's NOT healthy to be in my head all the time. I don't focus on recycling as much as I should either, so those are my two resolutions at least for now. I've pretty much given up on the losing weight thing not because I don't think I can but because it shouldn't be a resolution it should be a way of life for me anyway. I need to stop eating certain foods this year I pretty much stopped eating potatoes and dropped 20 pounds; every once in a while I'll sneak a couple of French fries, but the 20 pounds has stayed off. When I quit drinking alcohol many years ago I dropped between 40-60 pounds since I haven't drank, that weight is gone. I suppose if I fall off the wagon someday I better stick to lite beer. I think if I lost too much there might not be too much of me left.

I was over at Rite Aid Eve morning looking for a few things I saw this older fella maybe just a little older than me having a full on conversation with the vitamin section. I didn't hear what he was saying because I was having it out with the laundry detergent nearby. I don't think he wanted the whole world to hear him but he was talking to the Centrum. A lot of weird people out there. I got over to my favorite grub store in the whole world, Trader Joes, and got some food, snacks, and soda pop. The Scanner on the Eve was jumping with 415 Domestics, Beer Runs, and other calls involving thy Blessed miracle substance Alcohol.

Someone asked about 10 of the funniest calls I heard this year over the scanner. I hate to be a disappointment there but I don't save many of the reports, once I fill up a note book I toss em in the corner and pretty much toss them eventually. Off the top of my head I can't remember many funny calls. I do make cracks here and there about people doing the same thing over and over expecting different results; basic Alcoholism 101 is what it is but then they really are not all that funny they are tragic because people actually live that way, and I find it kinda sad. Maybe I'm becoming an old Foggy.

    Scanner Roni Reports, Tuesday:

  • So what's up in the 1800 Block of Cliff Drive? Periodically I hear about these campers illegal or otherwise a Truck and Boat on a trailer parked in that block right now someone is BBQing from the inside of the boat and the smoke is going into a business. Along with the call the Dispatcher mentioned that several businesses have Authority letters signed in that block I assume this is somehow connected to the calls of this Truck and Boat and campers there in why are they still there with so many complaints lodged against them I wonder? Maybe some people that own, rent or own a business on that block can enlighten the rest of us as to what is going on over there or maybe the Campers themselves. HELL this is an equal opportunity Scanner Report What's Up in the 1800 Block of Cliff Drive. My inquiring nosy mind wants to know. This is your chance to complain Let the rest of us know what is going on over there.
  • Not too sure what happened in the 500 Block of State street today it was first reported as a Wallet Snatch but a few moments later was reported as a woman who was running and dropped a wallet. A homeless man in his 60's might have picked up the wallet and run off with it he was described as a male in his 60's wearing a blue and grey shirt carrying a black garbage bag. Police caught up with him in front of Rite Aid in the 800 Block of State Street I don't know the rest of the story. Again, maybe someone who was involved will read this and tell us the rest maybe NOT.

  • 415 Domestic report of a male chasing a female in the 400 Block of South Canada New Year's Eve Morning.

  • Threats investigation in the 1200 Block of Coast Village Road I sure hope this has nothing to do with the loud party going on earlier but it probably does since I never hear calls over there and suddenly there's 2.
