updated: Dec 30, 2013, 4:10 PM

I need a metal hand railing built for my steps. Any suggestions for a place or person who can do it?

Ask for Brian. He did a great job for me.

California Wrought Iron on Jennings Ave., 962-5506. Roberto made me a pair of spectacular wrought-iron gates that separate my living room from the dining room. I priced all over SB and Ventura before choosing Roberto. His price was way, WAY lower than anyone else and the gates are absolutely first-rate.

Expect this to cost more than you expect, which is not to say it is expensive. You may need a guy to cut the concrete holes, someone to pour the concrete and someone else to paint it.
It is very labor intensive. I am sure all of the people mentioned above are reasonable.

central machine and welding for a standard gate, Ironwood design for something fancy. I would help you out myself but I already have too much going on...

Ian Plant@(805) 896-0201 is THE guy for this kind of thing. He does great work, offers very reasonable pricing, and has done tons of these throughout Goleta, SB, Montecito, and Carp., so has lots of solid references, too.

Do you need a building permit for this kind of work? This is a permanent change to the structure.

463: Did you HAVE to mention that? Really? Ughhhh, permit this, permission for that. This town is OUT OF CONTROL.

You need a permit for anything. Unless you don't get it and the inspectors don't make an issue of it when you sell your house. And you get along well with your neighbors.

RP here. It will be a single hand railing next to 4 steps so that no one can fall. It won't be attached to the house. Why on earth would someone suggest that a permit would need to pulled?

@535: Because that's how this town works. It seems that every time you pick up a hammer you need a building permit. And they ain't cheap, either. I'd be very surprised if you DIDN'T need one. That said, unless you've got miserable neighbors who will nark you out to the city, I'd just proceed without one.

Greg Harrah, 689-1414. He has welded custom iron products for us before. They're beautiful and function well. He does lots of work for local ranchers and businesses too.
