Desert Power
updated: Dec 30, 2013, 11:07 AM

By John Wiley

Desert power, dry cooling, or killer watts (think Death Valley but more moderate climate) might be names for the new industry I flew past in old California Valley before sunset. Whatever the nickname, this was the first time we'd flown by the vast shiny black solar farms out near Soda Lake. Last time we were there, only a few sections were done. Now it seems likely to be the biggest industry in the valley, and maybe still growing. There's even a line of towers marching up from the valley carrying armloads of wires buzzing with those watts over mountains toward SLO.
