Goleta Address vs Santa Barbara
updated: Dec 20, 2013, 12:45 PM

Do any Goleta businesses out there use Santa Barbara as their city for mailing purposes?

I work at a locally owned business in Goleta that has been in business for several decades now (we are one of the oldest in town). We had our address way before Goleta became a city and in the past we told everyone (except the government of course) that our mailing address' city was Santa Barbara, CA because "it sounded better." It worked until today. For the first time ever, the post office rejected a letter sent to us because it said Santa Barbara and not Goleta. Anyone else in Goleta capitalizing on Santa Barbara's name recognition?

Back in the old days, editors at the News-Press spent a lot of time looking up addresses on press releases because so many Goleta-area businesses claimed they were based in Santa Barbara.

What are the legality issues here? I'm sure there are many people and businesses in Goleta who prefer putting SB as their city. How long can this last? Are there any duplicate addresses between the two cities that could cause confusion at the post office?

Fifteen years ago, when I worked in the Castilian Drive area, all the businesses used Santa Barbara for their address. ABC Clio still does (checked their website).

The city of Goleta was incorporated less than 12 years ago, so saying 15 years ago was before Goleta existed as a city.

If the letter was not delivered to you, how do you know about this?

478981 - probably the sender provided the info.

Goleta was incorporated in 2002.

954, I just looked at a map of the city limits thinking the Bacara was not in the city but I was wrong. The western most edge of their property is right on the city limit line. I did see that Goleta beach is outside of the city limits.

A bunch of small businesses have mail drops in Montecito so they can have the cachet of that name on their envelopes and letterhead.

Why settle for Santa Barbara if you can go one better and have Montecito?

989- Bacara is not in the city limits of Santa Barbara, which they use on their address. City limits of Goleta, probably.

If an address is not in the Goleta city limits, it is a part of the unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County, hence a "Santa Barbara" mailing address. A large part of 93111 is included in this. I live in 93111, in "Notela" with a Santa Barbara mailing address. Additionally, many businesses on Hollister near the airport are not in the Goleta city limits.

The company I work for is located in Goleta and uses the PO in Goleta on Patterson so we have our address say Goleta. Have learned that nobody cares....

Who cares? Aren't there more important concerns? Santa Barbara sounds better ..... Goleta should be Goleta Beach .... Carry on!

I worked for a company that moved from goleta to santa barbara so they had the name.

Paid more money, had less property. Just wanted that name

All 93110 and 93111 zipcodes are S. B. Only 93117 is Goleta.

Montecito PO Box? Lol. Any business I see with a PO Box I don't take seriously. Just like using G-mail or Hotmail as corporate mail server. Tacky, transparent, low-budget.

We really blew it when we incorporated "Goleta" - we should have called ourselves "West Montecito" or "Beverly Hills North" or something like that!

The company I work for was told by the PO to use SB or the post office would not deliver mail, yet our permits were in the city of Goleta. Hollister/Patterson Ave. We had already ordered tee shirts with the Goleta address.....

132, although most of 93111 is not in the city of Goleta, some of it is. In particular, everything between the 217, Paterson, the 102, and Hollister.

-031, 'Been here since 1999, and haven't heard of 'Notela', but that area you are referring to is often called 'Noleta' (No!-lee-tah, because they consistently vote against incorporating with Goleta).

Maybe they can change it to 'Nutella' and incorporate?!

That would be delicious!
