Where to Fly RC Planes
updated: Dec 17, 2013, 8:51 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I could fly a small electric radio-controlled airplane in the Santa Barbara/Goleta area? I'm aware of the RC club areas but this is just a toy so I'd rather not be flying around $1000+ models!

Any tips greatly appreciated!

A school athletic field after the kids are gone for the day.

There is a club for flyers in Santa Ynez Valley. When I drive by their spot by the Santa Ynez river they always seem to be having fun with their toy planes.

I agree w/ EZ2: I frequently see them at Elings Park, near the paragliding area.

I always see people flying them under the SBA flight path.

I know this isn't the specific area you requested, but I was at carp beach a few weeks back and saw a gentleman with a pretty cool one. He said that he takes his there almost everyday- he is very knowledgable about them as well- now my boyfriend wants one! Hope this helps!

Eilings, More Mesa, Ellwood, Los Carneros Lake, E. Beach, San Marcos Foothill Preserve.

Since you're not a high pitched combustion engine you'll be bothering way fewer people - unless you dive bomb them and run into them and stuff.

lake los carneros is a NO. you will be fined if caught.

Your best bet is probably the top end of Via Gaitero, next to (not on) the San Marcos Preserve. Across the "bridge to nowhere" over 154.

Evergreen Park in outer Mongoleta or Viola Girsh park in Carp.

I believe San Marcos Foothill Preserve is a no as well. They have signs posted that specifically say no flying RC planes. Not sure about non combustible engines though.

Any of the fields at one of the public schools. When school is out of course.

Yup, school fields are best. Goleta Valley Jr High has a nice big field and is usually pretty empty during the weekend

There is a ranch in Santa Ynez with an airstrip that is visible from 154 as you head toward 246 from Santa Barbara where a model airplane club flies their planes on Sunday mornings.....it is before you hit Armour Ranch Road, I believe......it is on the East side of 154

What if these fall out of the sky and hit somebody on the head. Wasn't that the recent complaint about quadcopters?

@341.. are you kidding me? With all the worries to have in this day in age... THIS is one of them for you? Put things in perspective, please.

Most schools now prohibit public use of fields and open areas. Some even lock up the grounds!

Goleta Valley and La Colina Jr High don't lock their fields and both are very large.

Suggest you get in touch with the Santa Barbara R/C Modelers club: sbrcm dot org

They can get you access to both the very nice Santa Ynez field as well as the Las Positas Park site at the base of Hangglider Hill.

Ellwood Mesa is fine for non-motorized r/c gliders as they are recognized as an approved passive use of the open space, but motorized planes are not considered passive and should be flown elsewhere.

Viola Field in Carpinteria is also a popular spot when it is not being used for other activities.
