Scanner Reports 12-16-13
updated: Dec 16, 2013, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Well, well, well. Another weekend come and one and nine more Shoplifting Days ‘til Christmas. A family member reminded me of something I experienced many years ago over the Weekend. It was one of my better Christmas Holidays although at the time it did not seem that way. It was 1979 and once again I screwed up and burned my bridges. I had nowhere to go and it was the Dead of Winter, a couple weeks before Christmas, freezing at night, the wind howled biting my skin bone chilled cold the clothing I wore had nothing on this freeze and I knew several nights like this out in the cold I'd be dead. I was afraid to go to the Rescue Mission but it was the only place left to go. They probably wouldn't take me anyway. People were out looking for me. I had been caught and beaten once they said next time they would use a gun, the police were looking for me too. I had 3 choices Jail, Death, or Jesus Christ, and this Jesus was a Baptist. Jail and Jesus Christ was pretty much the same for me. Dead might be HELL since I'm a Catholic, didn't want to go there. I went to the Rescue Mission was talking to a big guy named Larry; he liked a ring I was wearing and took it for safekeeping (although I never saw it again). In exchange I got a warm wool blanket, a pillow, a hot cuppa coffee and a 2-Day old stale donut. I lay awake that night on the top bunk of a bunk bed listening to a room full of old men Snore, Belch, Cough, Fart, in their Sleep. I was wondering what in the HELL should I do? Unknown to me Larry called the Local PD to report a new resident, Later on he told me what the police said when he told them I was there, "Now we know where he's at when we want him we'll come pick him up." Thing is they really did not want me in jail they wanted me SOBER. Everyone did. I got little sleep that first night maybe a wink or two in the morning I hit the shower there was an old guy there named Shoemaker that set me up with clean dry clothing and took my wet dirty ones away. We got hot black coffee and plain oatmeal for breakfast. After that we walked a few blocks to work at the Hammond Baptist Church.

It was a huge place downtown one of those huge auditorium type buildings that fit 20,000 people with a stage for the Preacher and all his cronies. Many of the buildings in the downtown area were abandoned and falling apart and the Baptist Church was buying many of the buildings. There was talk in town that this church was a cult; maybe but they saved my skin at least for a while. We worked doing whatever work needed to be done Shoveling snow, moving furniture, painting rooms, or buildings, refinishing furniture, picking up donations. Lunch and Supper was the same thing; all the fresh Home Made Chicken Soup one could eat, bread, butter and the best American Cheese I have ever had. For snacks, hot black coffee and 2 Day old stale donuts. Then there was bible study every night. Wasn't really into that Jesus stuff but did it for my room and board. The preacher wrote a few books; one of the books he wrote was called: Jesus Had Short Hair. We all got short hair too. I was only there a few short weeks before I left but while I was there I was SOBER. The time I spent there gave me structure and a little discipline. I felt really good and somewhat fit when I left it was a foundation for a constructive lifestyle, the beginning of a different way of life. While I didn't go completely straight, something inside of me shifted gears slowed me down as I look back thru all the years I've been here on Earth the time I spent there in that place was one of the greatest gifts I have ever received.
