updated: Dec 15, 2013, 1:18 PM

My car windshield has small crack from rock/stone when driving on the 101. Anybody recommended a windshield repair service in Santa Barbara?

Hi, You should also report this to Caltrans. They will reimburse for repairs if it is found they are at fault for not keeping up with road maintenance.

There's a place on Anacapa St below Cota that I took our vehicle to. ABS Glass it's now called. They'll fill the crack with some kind of resin for $50. If the crack later expands and you require a new windshield, they'll deduct the $50 from the price of a new windshield.

Their fix has apparently worked for 4 years -- no signs of the crack expanding in my car's windshield.

I second calling your insurance company. You are usually covered for this at no cost to you. Geico sent a mobile repair truck to my work place to get it fixed.

Yes, call your insurance company. Geico has repaired mine several time at no charge. CalTrans will do nothing.

I called around on a weekend, and ended up getting the best deal from some guys down in Ventura or Oxnard. I tried to stay local, but they were over $100 less than the other options. It was an old beater car, with a completely smashed windshield -- pole pruner got knocked into it -- so complete replacement was my only option.

On Friday my husband took his car to Tri-County Auto Glass at 526 Anacapa. I think with the Axxess card it was $25 to fix a chip in his windshield (regularly $50).

ABS Glass is great, but I would start with your insurance company.

Yes, call your insurance company because if you have comp coverage usually crack repairs are FREE.

Ron Cook has come to our house pronto and done a great job a couple of times. Don't let that spot grow any bigger or it'll mean a new windshield. Good luck!

jc autoglass, will come to your house, just replaced my windshield for $210 and did a great job.

Please let us know if Caltrans does anything for you. I can't believe that they would do that.

If it's a small chip and the windshield is the OEM (original one that came with the car), repair rather than replace.

Replacement windshields are far inferior to OEM and will chip/crack easier. Sure, the insurance companies may replace the windshield, but it won't be OEM. If you doubt there's much of a difference, inform yourself via Google and check the price difference; it's not just a perceived difference in quality.

Dearest Edhat, why is this requested advice from the public more important than my requested advice? I bet you just delete this and give me no response as usual. Stay classy Ed!

If you have comprehensive coverage, many insurance companies will waive your deductible if you are REPAIRING the windshield. They will not waive the deductible if you are REPLACING the windshield. Get this fixed ASAP before the crack gets bigger and you need a replacement.
