December 15, 2013 - SPUG It Out

Have you heard of a SPUG? It's not a special hug, a fancy kitchen utensil, or as Betsy Green suggested a spaniel-pug mix. According to Betsy's recent historical column, a SPUG stands for the Society for the Prevention of Useless Giving. The advertisement to our right posted 100 years ago in December 1913, discouraged people from giving token gifts of useless items. Can you imagine if that campaign started again today? We might think these people were crazy, especially since most of the gifts we receive during the holidays are frivolous techy items that allow us to watch our television shows anywhere at any time. Are these things really needed? Of course not! But we feel really cool owning them. Now imagine if a group of socialites dressed in Victorian garb, stood outside Best Buy while picketing technology and urged customers to buy linens instead. That would be a pretty odd movement to witness. Luckily for all you tech lovers, Christmas is only 10 days away and there is no one to shame you at Best Buy.

Our Cat of the Week is Poppi who either loves the holidays or hates them, we can't tell. Our Dog of the Week is Babi, a sweet-hearted mix who is looking for an active household. Our Non-Profit of the Week is the Unity Shoppe who works tirelessly during the Holiday season to provide the basic necessities of life while encouraging self- sufficiency and independent living during periodic times of crisis. David Powdrell relishes in the beauty of our historic Franklin Trail, the Dedicated Staff bounced around for exercise as Ed instructed, and Billy Goodnick takes a closer look at Shoreline Park.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

GARDEN OF ED: Here's my tip of the hat to the arboreal splendor of Shoreline Park.

HISTORY: It was an old-fashioned Christmas in Santa Barbara 100 years ago. Betsy Green shares highlights from December in 1913.

Ed has instructed The Dedicated Staff to get out there and try out various activities around Santa Barbara. This time we bounced at Airobic Fitness.

POWDRELL: The community of Carpinteria recently received an incredible gift, the re-opening of the first 2.15 miles of the historic Franklin Trail.

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: The Unity Shoppe provides the basic necessities of life while encouraging self- sufficiency and independent living during periodic times of crisis.

CAT OF THE WEEK: Meet Poppi, she loves to dress up for the holidays!

DOG OF THE WEEK: Meet Babi, a gold-eyed playful pup in need of an athletic human companion.
