It's hard to check Edison's website after they chop the power without forewarning customers. An unexpected breakdown is one thing, but we've experienced 3 outages for line maintenance in the past two weeks without a word from Edison - just sudden blackouts lasting several hours. No complaints about repairing/upgrading our over-stressed local grid, and customers shouldn't have to check their website daily to see whether the lights will be staying on. They could notify by phone, email in advance, text msg., or even a mailed notice for planned work.

You can also call Edison's toll-free number. I keep the number in my cell phone contacts. The automated system will ask questions to determine where you're calling from, then give you the latest information for that area. The number is 800-611-1911.

This wasn't a planned outage. In the rare instances when SCE does schedule maintenance requiring an outage, I've always gotten a postcard weeks in advance with notification.

Their website is available by cell phone, there's even a free app direct to the outage map. You can also call their toll-free number 800-611-1911.

@586P - according to the Edison website, yes, this was a planned outage.

If you can post to edhat you can check the SCE website.

Paying customers shouldn't have to keep track of the utility's scheduling department. Since we're in the developed world, electricity is taken for granted; outages are the exception. It's Edison's responsibility to reach out and give notice when they plan an interruption, especially one of many hours duration in very cold weather. Doesn't seem to be asking too much of a monopoly.

If you are renting and utilities are included in your rent then they may have notified the owner, I myself got notice of a planned outage but tossed it in my I will get to it pile. The outage was explained after the fact when I got around to opening my mail.
