Loud Booms
updated: Dec 08, 2013, 7:33 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Did anyone else hear a series of loud booms at around 6:40 tonight? It sounded like thunder, but was booming so rapidly, it sounded more like a distant series of explosions.

Think it was from the Parade of Lights at the harbor?

My apologies to Edhat, EDitors and all staff. I sent the following in as a posting; I knew it would take a while for it to appear.
Yes, I'm really ranting, and it's raw, but please read it in its entirety. Thank you.
************************************
I'm FURIOUS about lack of notice of Parade of Lights fireworks!

An event is one thing. An event WITH FIRE WORKS is another. I called non emergency police to verify it was Parade of Lights. Non-locals might not know; I just assumed. Went to window a minute later, at 6:34 or 6:35 and saw a panicked dog racing eastbound on W. Mission, black, maybe older, Lab mix but not a lab; I think it had a collar. Looked more like a Lab X herding dog. Hope he doesn't die in traffic tonight. I'm not blaming owner either; my dog broke out of well- and high-fenced yards twice due to panic over thunder and fireworks. He never even raised his ears if I was with him.

Dang it! This is not an event to be only posted on Edhat's Event page. If there are fireworks it is a public issue and people need to be aware and prepare for their pets!

I'm sure not blaming Edhat. I will certainly be contacting the organizers, harbor patrol, city parks, all who are involved in the event. They sure should have posted on Edhat regular page that fireworks would be set off. Did they inform animal control services and the volunteer group that cares for strays?!

I think the event is great.
I think the organizers should have put out public notices about the fireworks.

Edhat's down anyway (when I heard the fireworks and saw the panicked dog). Or is that just me?

It was the fireworks down at the Harbor, and we heard it indoors here all the way up here near the Mission while we were eating dinner. We saw the bursts pop over the trees over Garden St.

455p The fireworks happen every year, KEYT mentioned they would be happening. At the same time it couldn't be a bad idea to publicize it a little better. Its a great event and fun for the whole family even in the cold this year!

Every 4th of July the City of Goleta sends emails and automatic phone calls to Goleta residents informing us of the fireworks at Girsh Park. Maybe SB needs to learn something from its neighbor up the coast.

OP here - I didn't even THINK about the Boat Parade...and now I'm bummed that I missed it this year. Thanks to everyone for the answers; it was driving me crazy that my beloved Edhat "instant information" was down when I became curious. Just goes to show how much I need and appreciate Edhat (and the local community) for keeping me informed and connected. Happy Holidays to all!

455P-The parade and fireworks were mentioned in the Events section of the Independent----that seems like public notice. It was also listed in other sites, KEYT, News Press, Harbor news, as well as the city website. It seems that it was well publicized...and if someone has an animal with severe anxiety for thunder and fireworks then that person needs to spend a bit of time at least reading the local newpaper. The Independent is a great source, and lists basically everything. Including this event.

I know my rant was raw. Thanks, 461; I read KEYT website late morning today and saw no notice.

Milly, I don't disagree. I'm obviously too dependent on Edhat, but I read Noozhawk and KEYT every day, usually in the a.m., I even occasionally watch KEYT!

I don't have a pet. But seeing that running dog cross a street is still haunting me. I know the dog is the owner's responsibility, but so many of us look out for animals in SB.

I guess my point is that it would be nice if it had been more obvious. I feel the event should have been posted in general news rather than Event listings, which I rarely read. More fool me. Edhat readers laugh at "obvious" postings from Fire Dept and Emergency Ops. I wish there had been that kind of posting about the fireworks. Thanks for reading my rant.

Well... wow. You sure are gonna be busy contacting all those people! And no, they don't need to post on Edhat, because Edhat, as lovely as it is, isn't an official civic website. I guess maybe we just need to grin & bear it sometimes.

455P/485P: I and my housemates don't live in a vacuum. There are five of us, and not one of us knew the Parade of Lights was on tonight.

Friends of mine lost their dog, one of the greatest dogs I ever knew, to Hwy 101, years back, thanks to the Parade of Lights fireworks. The dog was behind an 8' fence, but panicked so badly that it managed to get out and run three miles to the freeway, before being hit by a car.

I once rescued a Rottweiler, on a new moon night, 4th of July, as it ran down my unlit street. I heard the dog's collar jangling and was able to trap it in my backyard---the poor thing was so beside itself, it was drooling all over my kitchen floor. The owner came to get him the next day.

A woman I know who lives in Goleta watched her dog plow through their plate glass window and run off into the night, thanks to fireworks.

Anyone who doesn't see why you're going to ask for more notice to the public is someone who has no idea how such horrifically loud, booming noise can cause pets to lose their minds with fear. I applaud you.

It did seem like the noise was much louder than usual this year. Maybe atmospheric/weather conditions? It certainly seemed a lot louder than the 4th of July fireworks, and that was from inside with all doors and windows closed. My cats freaked out; one was still hiding under the covers an hour later--glad they were inside! I forgot about the fireworks, too. It would be nice if there was a reminder about them ahead of time. Maybe next year one of us will remember to post it on Edhat the day of the parade...

Dog owners should mark your calendars for our two traumatic events every year and plan to be home or take your dog elsewhere! I will add that, on the upper westside, it seemed AWFULLY loud this year. The atmospheric conditions make a big difference with sound and they're not very predictable. Last night it sounded like something other than fireworks up here!

While I sympathize with pet owners, and particularly with the innocent animals, I concur with 517. It's December in Santa Barbara. There will be a parade of lights and harbor celebration. Responsible pet owner need to be proactive in seeking information as to when it will occur. It is usually early in the month. A little detective work will easily put pet owners in touch with the necessary info to take care of their pets. The information is readily available, and the media cannot inform those who do not avail themselves of the media services. By the same token, perhaps the media could also assist with the same type of "warning" they give re: keeping pets indoors as they do in July so that pet owners who do read or watch TV can share with friends who may not. It would also be helpful if "pet friendly" hotels provided guests with the info if they are staying during this time. Of course, perhaps they do.

This complaint is rather like being in Manhattan on July 4 and feigning surprise that Macy's has a pyrotechnic display on the East River!

yeah not quite 554, comparing SB boat parade to Manhattan's world famous independence day display!

Must have been the weather, loudest I've ever heard fireworks at any time of year and yes I know it happens every year but my wife and I still looked at each other and our spooked dog and wondered what the H was going on.

I'm glad to hear that there are fireworks every year at the Parade of Lights. I've lived here in Goleta 40 yrs+ and I DIDN'T KNOW a thing about fireworks. Of course I've heard of the Parade of Lights, just nothing about fireworks. I was driving through downtown last night just at the end of the show and was surprised to see them and wanted to know what was going on. Thanks EdHat for clearing up the confusion!

If they had used the reverse-911 system to inform 100,000 residents of fireworks noise, there would be many upset posters here and much public ranting. Be careful what you ask for. It's not the world's job to knock on your door to keep you informed.

I know the parade has been going on for about 25 years. Every year they shoot off fireworks.

Why is this a surprise?

And yes, last night's show had more of the flash/boom type of fireworks.
