Vacant Building
updated: Dec 06, 2013, 3:04 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

This building at the corner of Haley and Anacapa Streets is vacant yet again. Businesses at this location seem to come and go as fast as the restaurants in this town. I was trying to think of all the different business that have been there over the years. Can anyone add to the list?

Perfect location for a "massage" parlor.

It was a funeral parlor for a long time (on and off). I don't think anything would do well in there after that.

Too many bums in that area scaring business away.

Wasn't it a thrift store for... the Humane Society? in the 80's or 90's? Some sort of animal welfare organization....

I think you might have your corners mixed up. That photo is the corner of Haley & Anacapa. The funeral home was at Haley & Garden, now a silkscreen place and a contractor. The building in your photo has been empty for sometime. I think the owner recently passed away. He owned a lot of buildings, like the old Essau's on State.

it was the Church of Skaten in the 90's, and a heads shop after that . If that's the corner of Haley and Anacapa.

I lived across the street above the old Mac's Grog & grocery.

The building you speak of ,housed a restaurant by the name 'Saucy Pig Barbecue '

Pure soul food and darn good . 1967

Kitty corner to that was the Palace- A-Go-Go.
Rhythm & Blues

It was a hospital supply place in 1988 - remember getting a wheelchair there that year. Then it was Bob Andrews Automotive (did smog checks).

I'm sure none of you would know this, but in the mid 1970s, the smaller, left side,
housed "Soul City Records". The only place
in town where you could get any and all
R&B, Soul, and Jazz music. A great alternative to all the mainstream stores in town that wouldn't carry alternative music.

Where was the old Mac's Grog&Gro? The little old gas station one there now has been there since the 60's.

Church of Skatan was at Anacapa and Gutierrez, before it moved to the church building half a block away where it is now. Thanks for the clarification Patrick.
I wish I could've been around when there was soul food barbecue and rhythm & blues across the street! What a great corner.
