Electronics Repair
updated: Dec 05, 2013, 12:56 PM

My 3-year old onkyo AV receiver has stopped working. It no longer has any sound coming out of the speakers or headphones. The standby bypass works as sound will come out of the televisions when in standby mode. Does anyone have a referral for a local electronics repair company?

Might be cheaper to replace then repair. The bane of cheap electronics and high repair costs, more electronic waste.

Electronic Specialists. Once upon a time, she worked out of the Capt. Video behind the Turnpike Shell. Drop off and pick up there. Last time I used them they were on De la Vina. I always dealt with a woman who was maybe French. She has kept my old tape deck and amps running for years. She'll tell you when it's time to replace it, when she can no longer get parts. She has a real appreciation for the older quality equipment. Very honest and excellent work.Better to repair than throw away and replace if possible.

Our 5 yr old Onkyo did the same thing. I called the electronics specialist where we bought it, described the problem. I went through a series of tests with him to find the problem and then asked if we should repair or replace. His answer: Technology is advancing so quickly, it's a waste of money to spend the SAME amount repairing the old one. We bought a new one but not an ONKYO. Lots of people have had the same kind of failure.

Sorry to hijack this thread but with all of the negative Onkyo sentiments I felt compelled to chime in with some positive. I have been very happy with all of my Onkyo receivers. Onkyo is a good solution for those of us who like the newest technology features and can't afford high end equipment. I like to stay on the leading edge of technology and for that reason my enthusiasm for a particular receiver tends to wan before it breaks. A year or so ago I upgraded a few components and wanted to go all HDMI. I ended up with a Pioneer receiver, which was in the same price range as the Onkyo. Now I've had problems with the Pioneer and had to drive to LA for warranty service. Kinda wishing I'd stuck with Onkyo. Your milage may vary.

OP- I found many other people indicating exactly the same problem that I am having on the Onkyo website forum. The forum moderator directed them to contact a specific person with Onkyo to get the issue taken care of. Even though my warranty is expired they are authorizing a one time, out of warranty, service request. I'm waiting for the service authorization to be sent to the service center, but it sounds promising.
