Comet Lovejoy
updated: Dec 03, 2013, 8:51 PM

By Edhat Subscriber, Chuck Cagara

With hopes dashed when Comet Ison largely disintegrated during its close solar encounter, astronomers turned to a "consolation prize," namely Comet Lovejoy - currently visible in the northeastern pre-dawn sky.

Here is a view from December 2nd at 4:16 a.m. Note the beautiful green gas coma surrounding the nucleus.

While waiting for Lovejoy to rise above the horizon we turned our camera to one of the loveliest sights in the Winter sky - M42 - The Great Nebula In Orion.
