Affordable Infrared Sauna
updated: Dec 02, 2013, 4:43 PM

I got very sick due to mold in my house and have been using the infrared sauna at Alchemy Arts on the advice of my doctor, in order to detox. But it's $70 a session. Does anyone know a place to get an infrared sauna that is more affordable.

I might ask for a second medical opinion before spending $1K for a sauna that may actually do very little for my health

If it works, whether it is actual science, or the placebo, then isn't it worth every cent?

If it is just snake oil and does not work, then buyer beware...

My $0.02

I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on tv....

The herbal medicine store on Victoria next to Bouchon has one, I've used it.

If your doctor thinks this is necessary for your recovery and is willing to write you a letter stating and justifying it, you might be able to use a Flex/HSA balance (if you have one) to help pay for it.

No reason you can't build your own in a closet. I'd suggest buying inexpensive work-lamps, inferred heat bulbs, a power strip to plug the lamps into, and perhaps those thin Mylar emergency heat blankets to line the closet. You could probably buy everything you need at Ace for about $100.00. Good luck.

Whenever I read about a cure or treatment that "draws out the toxins in your body", my eyes glaze over and the name of the cure/treatment gets filed in tge "quack medicine" drawer in my brain.

Go stand in the sun for 30 minutes....it's free and it will do you more good.

I have a friend who was selling one on Facebook. Would you like me to see if it's still available?

When I worked around infrared systems my doctor recommended wearing protective glasses. I knew enough about infrared to know he was badly informed. A doctor is at least a couple steps short of God

Google information regarding using iodine for the elimination of toxins in the body. I haven't experienced it personally however a friend has done several studies on the subject. Good luck! Black mold is terrible, I had it in my apartment. I feel for you...

LOL, the mold hysteria is comical considering that every home in SB County has mold growing in it. Infrared sauna better be turned up to 11...

838 -

Are you referring to Stachybotrys or just common mold?

Yes, mold is common here but Stachybotrys causes permanent health issues and is deadly. The only LOL going on is that pointed at you and your naivete'

A sauna is nothing more than a heat source in a small enclosure. You can put a $40 heater it in a bathroom for the same effect. Just place it away from anything combustible and keep the temperature within safe limits.

Seems like if it is that toxic, you'd want to move to a different place. Or is the infrared sauna intended to kill the mold as well as make you feel better?

OP, I am interested in learning more about infrared sauna treatments. Do you feel the ones you've had (how many?) are helping you feel better? Is it a temporary effect?

I hope you find the answers you seek and return to wellness!

The mere mention of "infrared" can bring unintentional misinterpretation. It's nothing more than thermal energy that is just below the visible light spectrum. Half of the sun's energy on Earth is infrared, and even objects at room temperature give off some infrared. Most of us simply know this as 'heat.'

473827, there are sources of infrared that can damage your eyes. such as power laser diodes. If you were working with IR black body sources, then the power is much lower. If he didn't know your specific exposure and its peak power level, then he still gave you good advice.

473838 There is a BIG difference between mold and black toxic mold. I know this because I almost died from toxic mold posioning last February. I was in ICU for six days because of the mold in my house. Still have mold in my system and it may take years to get rid of it. TOXIC mold is no joke!! If anyone out there thinks they may be sick because of mold in your home..........get out. Or, have a mold inspection company come to evaluate the type of mold in your home.
