Police and Body Bag
updated: Dec 02, 2013, 11:36 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I saw a blue, zipped up, body bag on the shoulder of the 101N, in front of a SBSD unit, around 7:35 am 12/2/2013. Any news about that?

Was this north of the Winchester off-ramp, around the Cahedral Oaks overpass? I saw something going on around 5:50 this morning, but it was too dark to see anything.

I saw it too, thought it was a tarp covering something. I thought maybe an animal hit by a car and the officer standing by for animal control.

Surfboard bag makes no sense, why would the Sheriff deputy be just standing there near it, car parked with lights flashing?

615 - If it was a surfboard bag that had flown out of a truck bed it would make sense. The board can't fit into a patrol car due to the back seat divider so he was probably waiting for another vehicle to come and pick it up. Or if the bag had an ID on it maybe he was trying to contact the owner.

It wasn't a patrol car, it was SBSO SUV, Ford Explorer I believe but coulda been a Jeep.

Officer was standing ~10ft away and the object was far enough off the road against the bridge embankment that there wouldn't have been a reason for him to park on the shoulder w/ lights on.

#612 here again; I passed by twice because I fogot to put on my "public" glasses and had to go back home. The first time I approached the overpassing there definately was an officer with another person on the corner of the bridge closest to the Winchester Commons, I could see a light(s) near the southbound onramp, that didn't seem to get any closer. On my second pass a few minutes later, saw an officer in a Sheriff SUV almost blocking the southbound onramp; I asked if it was o.k. to get on the freeway and he just nodded. My husband left the house a few minutes after my second pass and he saw three patrol cars on the northboud freeway, but didn't see anything else. Wonder if we will ever know what was up? Not a very high bridge to jump from, I think it was something else, definately more than a board-bag though.

Ok Roger, We're counting on you for the official updated conclusion to this story.

Can you beat KEYT to the scoop? That's pretty easy these days unless the The Palm is out cruising & scanning. :-)

634 - when I went by it was the 1 SBSO truck on the NB side more or less under the bridge. He was parked partly on the hard shoulder, partly in dirt. He was standing 5-ft from the SUV and the blue tarp thing was up against the cement embankment for the bridge where it meets the dirt. Looked like a blue plastic tarp, nothing like a surfboard bag.

That's what made me think deceased animal - covered w/ tarp so as not to be visible and officer waiting for animal control to come clean it up.

Or, you know, you could phone the public information desk at SBSO and, gulp, ask about it.

Happened around 5 am per twitter. Definitely a body and that is just about half of a bigger story. There is probably a valid reason SBSO and other news outlets are not commenting or mentioning the incident(s) at all.

The story was posted a few minutes ago. Apparently , At approximately 4 a.m. this morning, December 2, SB County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a report of a stabbing that occurred in the 600 block of Mayrum Street in an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara. When Sheriff's Deputies arrived, they discovered the victim, 56 year old Rubel Trevino, had been stabbed several times. He was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and is recovering from his injuries.

The victim was able to identify the suspect who had broken into his residence while he was sleeping and allegedly committed the stabbing as his business partner, 66 year old Thomas Hutchison of Goleta. The victim was able to get away from the suspect and run outside to call for help. The suspect then fled on foot.

Approximately fifteen minutes later, Sheriff's Deputies responded to a report of a subject attempting to jump from the Winchester overpass in Goleta. When Sheriff's Deputies arrived to make contact with the subject, he jumped from the overpass and landed below on the shoulder of the northbound 101 freeway. Despite life-saving measures by paramedics, the subject was pronounced dead at the scene.
