Rocky Past
updated: Dec 02, 2013, 8:54 AM

By John Wiley

We were joined on a short flight this weekend by our friends Monica and Sarah, who made it even more fun because they "get" the amazing joy of flying in a small plane. Flying our hills usually gets me thinking about our region's rocky past, especially around "Dino Hill." I call it that because as seen toward the bottom of the first pic, the area out toward Gaviota has that jagged gray outcrop that to me is somehow reminiscent of a Stegosaurus back sticking out of the hill.

Because one SBA runway is closed for major work (snarling air traffic at times), I volunteered with ATC to circle briefly in the hills below Broadcast Peak. As we passed over the ridge of rock seen in the last two pix I was reminded of another rock reference in our past. I'd never before noticed what looks very much like a large acorn grinding hole, toward the center-top of pic 2. As you can see in pic 3 after I'd turned for a closer look, it's now holding some water from the recent rains. So we talked about imagining one or more people patiently pounding acorns there, and wondering when anyone last found their way through the thick brush to stand there with the spectacular view we were enjoying.
