Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley announced today that Martin Leo Maguire pled guilty to felony driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs causing injury, and admitted to having a prior reduced driving under the influence conviction in 2009. Mr. Maguire also admitted to inflicting great bodily injury upon Mr. and Mrs. James Atwood, Canadian citizens, who were on a motorcycle trip here in the United States at the time. The incident took place on May 29, 2013 on Old Coast Highway, when Mr. Maguire's vehicle came across the double yellow lines into the lane Mr. and Mrs. Atwood were traveling on their motorcycle and struck them. Both of the Atwoods lost a leg as a result of the accident, and are still undergoing rehabilitation efforts in Canada. Sentencing is set for January 8, 2014, in Department 12 before the Honorable John Dobroth. The District Attorney did not offer any plea bargain in this case. The defendant faces up to nine years in prison.
