Summary: On Saturday, October 26, 2013 members from CERT programs throughout Santa Barbara County will take part in the Third Annual Santa Barbara County CERT Drill. The drill is being hosted by the City of Carpinteria.
During the drill, CERTs will work through a scenario based on a 7.8 earthquake striking southern Santa Barbara County. CERTs will address challenges and test their problem-solving skills by drawing upon knowledge and skills they learned during the program's 24-hour training course. The drill will present key skills tests related to fire suppression, medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster psychology. Local volunteers will be playing the role of disaster victims to bring a sense of reality to the scenario.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their community and trains them in basic disaster response skills. Using the training acquired during classroom sessions and hands on exercises, CERT members can assist their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to provide assistance.
In Santa Barbara County, over 3,500 residents have graduated from CERT training academies. Additionally, in 2012, the Santa Barbara County CERT Committee received the Service Group of the Year Award from the Governor's Office for demonstrating unwavering service and commitment to the local community.
