Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today that Michele Ann Newberry, age 48, pled to felony charges of Unlawful Sex with a Minor and Oral Copulation with a Minor. This criminal activity occurred during John Doe's sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school.
Newberry was sentenced to one year in county jail and five years on felony probation. During the period of probation, Newberry will be required to register as a sex offender and must complete sex offender therapy. Additionally, Newberry will not be allowed to have contact with minors during the period of probation.
During the sentencing hearing, the victim's family stated that this crime had a devastating effect on their son. John Doe's father noted that Newberry was 27 years older than his son.
Prosecuting attorney Brandon Jebens stated that, "Although this sentence could never restore the victim's sense of well-being, the agreement was reached to the victim's satisfaction as well as his parents and the investigating law enforcement officers." Jebens continued, "The fact that the defendant was ordered to register as a sex offender was of the utmost importance to the victim and his family."
