Success with a Butterfly Plant!

With all of the bad news out there, I thought I'd pass on something that has been brightening my days, lately. I bought a Milkweed plant (Asclepias currassavica) about a month ago, on a whim. I put it out in a sunny spot and miraculously remembered to water it occasionally - not really a plant person. It grew some and the flowers were bright and cheerful. Last week I noticed several Monarchs hanging around it, landing on the plant over and over purposefully; they didn't seem to mind me and I was able to be really close to them. To my delight, this week, I have counted at least 40 caterpillars, crawling on and truthfully, eating a good quantity of the flowers and foliage. But, look at how fat and happy they are. I am looking forward to watching what happens next and encourage anyone with a sunny space (who also might need a little cheering up) to try coaxing some butterflies your way.
