Just thought I'd send out an FYI about a large bear (probably about 400-
450lbs) that I almost hit on hwy 150 last night at approximately 9pm...he
slowly crossed the road and luckily I had time to come to a complete
stop to allow him to continue his saunter across the road!
Location was between 6900-7100 Casitas Pass Road. This is a
residential area and the bear walked onto someones property. When I
called the police department they referred me to the fish and game
department 24 hour help line. They do not put out a broadcast to warn
people, they assume that because it is a rural area all residents are
aware of the danger.
I'm hopeful that this bear does not decide to cross the road again,
however with the lack of rain I'm sure he will continue to wander
searching for food! He is not far from Carpinteria, would be nice to
make sure people are aware that they are wandering and to be careful
on the road!
The only reason I did not hit him is because I noticed that there was a
large part of the road that I could not see the reflectors in the street and
that seemed odd, therefore I slowed down and was able to identify that
it was a bear and stop my vehicle!
He continued to take his time crossing the road and only gave me one
small glance as he went, totally un-phased by my presence!
