Former County Fire Employee Arrested

Former Santa Barbara County Fire Department Employee, Robert Perez, was arrested today, August 30, following a four month
long investigation by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office. Perez, who is retired from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, is charged with grand
theft and filing false tax returns. Through arrangements with his attorney, Perez voluntarily turned himself in to the Sheriff's Office at 10 a.m. today and
was subsequently arrested and booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail.
The alleged misappropriation of funds and tax evasion occurred during the time Perez held the position of Insurance
Administrator with the Santa Barbara County Firefighter's Local 2046. The Firefighter's Union notified the Sheriff's Office regarding the alleged criminal
activity in March of 2013 which prompted an investigation by the Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigations Division.
Perez is being held at the Santa Barbara County Jail on $110,000 bail. The case has been handed over to the Santa Barbara
County District Attorney's Office.

The People of the State of California v. Robert Joseph Perez
District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today that seven felony charges have been filed against retired Santa Barbara Fire Department employee, Robert Joseph Perez. Mr. Perez has been charged with one count of a violation of Penal Code section 487(a), felony grand theft, and six counts of filing a false income tax return for tax years 2007-2012, a felony violation of Revenue and Taxation Code section 19705(a)(1). The complaint alleges that the grand theft occurred between March 1, 2006 and February 12, 2012.
Additionally, a special allegation has been charged alleging the amount of theft to exceed $100,000.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Brian Cota has been assigned to the case. Arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in Santa Barbara Superior Court, Dept. 8.
