Attempted Murder Arrest: Juvenile Gang Member in Custody for Wentworth Avenue Shooting
------ SANTA BARBARA, CA - August 28, 2013 ------
A five-month investigation by detectives from the Santa Barbara Police Department's Youth Services
Section led to the arrest of a 17-year old male juvenile Santa Barbara area gang member for the crimes
of attempted murder and participation in a criminal street gang. This arrest stems from the shooting of
an 18-year old gang member on the 600 block of Wentworth Avenue on March 17, 2013.
The victim in this incident was hospitalized for several days and survived. Initially it was unclear if the
victim's injury was the result of a criminal act, accident, or was self-inflicted. Investigation ultimately
revealed that this shooting was a crime and a gang incident. On August 21, 2013 SBPD detectives
contacted the suspect at Santa Barbara County Juvenile Hall, where he was already being held for an
unrelated offense, and placed him in custody on the aforementioned charges. This investigation is still
ongoing and additional details are being withheld.
The Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office has indicated its intention to prosecute this suspect
as an adult.
------ SANTA BARBARA, CA - March 18, 2013 ------
On March 17, 2013 at 12:04 a.m., officers and detectives from the Santa Barbara Police Department
responded to a call of a subject that had been shot on the 600 block of Wentworth Avenue. Upon arrival
they located an 18-year old male victim with a gunshot wound to the abdomen lying on the west
sidewalk. The victim was transported from the scene by paramedics to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
for treatment. He is expected to survive.
Investigation indicates the following. The victim is a Santa Barbara resident and was attending a family
gathering at a residence on the 600 block of Wentworth Avenue when he was shot. The victim is a Santa
Barbara area gang member, however there is no indication thus far that this incident is gang related.
The victim has been uncooperative. This investigation is still ongoing; no arrests have occurred and no
determination has yet been made as to whether the victim's injury was the result of a criminal act,
accident, or was self-inflicted.
