Summer Vacation
updated: Aug 24, 2013, 6:30 PM

By Steve McGovern

Lake Almanor is in the Sierra Mountains, near Mt. Lassen. It's one of the largest man-made lakes in California (if not the largest) and is a favorite place for northern Californians to vacation. Every year we go there for a week or so, and with the exception of last year when there were two large fires burning in the vicinity, it is beautiful. Here are some pictures of the Lake and the surrounding area.

This is Lake Almanor near sunset. There have been numerous earthquakes in or near the lake since a big one in May. We felt several during the week we were there, the strongest at 2.9 about two miles west of where this picture was taken and about 3/4 of mile from where we stayed.

This is a shot of Almanor taken from the side of Mt. Lassen mid-morning. There is a little smoke to be seen in the center of the picture from a fire burning near Oroville. Last year, I wouldn't have been able to see more than a 100 yards from here, had I been able to even get here. The road through Mt. Lassen National Park was closed at this time last year. One big fire burning in the park, the other burning to the southwest of the lake (to the right in this picture). Houses along the lake were evacuated for a few days last year as the fire grew very close to the lake.

A couple pictures of fire damage just south of Lake Almanor, near Butt Lake. This lake is very popular with my two small grandsons. For some reason, the word "butt" makes them laugh hysterically. Imagine that.

Butt Lake

A couple views of Mt. Lassen. No snow, very few glaciers left. Not California's most impressive mountain, but it is an active volcano, so perhaps it will make a name for itself one day soon...
