The cronut craze that's been sweeping the East Coast has finally made its way to Santa Barbara. The
croissant and donut hybrid has been highly publicized as the new breakfast treat that's easily luring
people off their Jenny Craig diets. My salivary glands have been anxiously waiting the debut of our hometown cronut. Yes people, it is now here.
The official cronut was invented in a New York bakery and was trademarked in May of this year. "We call
it a dossaunt," a local Spudnuts employee told me, "for legal purposes." The Spudnuts on upper State
Street started selling the dossaunt approximately three weeks ago. "After a social media push, they have
been selling really well," said the Spudnuts employee.
Currently there are six flavors of the dossaunt; vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon, glaze, powdered sugar and
blueberry cream. For extensive research purposes, I ordered one of each flavor.
Upon sampling each delicious gift from God, I grew to like each one more than the last. My ultimate favorite would have
to be the blueberry cream. The flaky croissant style layers have a sweet cream filling and are topped
with a blueberry jam. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. Currently the Upper State
Spudnuts is the only bakery in town making this unique donut, make sure to get them while you can.
