Santa Maria Gang Sweep
updated: May 18, 2013, 1:08 PM

Source: Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department

On Friday, May 18, 2013, detectives from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Gang Enforcement Unit, with assistance from the Sheriff's Narcotic Enforcement Unit, the Santa Maria Police Department Gang Suppression Team and the Santa Barbara County Probation Department conducted a gang sweep in the Santa Maria Valley. The gang sweep was conducted in response to increasing gang and narcotics related activity in the Santa Maria Valley.

As part of the gang sweep, Law Enforcement Officers from the Sheriff's Office, the Santa Maria Police Department and from the Santa Barbara County Probation Department conducted directed patrols in areas known to be frequented by persons engaging in gang related activities and/or narcotics related activities. During the course of traffic enforcement stops and pedestrian contacts, 18 people were arrested for a variety of criminal violations. As of this point, none of the persons arrested during this sweep have been charged with a gang enhancement. Sheriff's Gang Detectives will be following up to determine if such charges are appropriate.

In addition to the above noted directed patrol efforts, officers from the Santa Barbara County Probation Department conducted a series of probation compliance checks. As a result, probation officers made 4 arrests.
