Spam Phone Call
updated: May 18, 2013, 12:37 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

During the past two weeks we've gotten several calls from an area code 702 (Nevada) number, usually during the early evening. If the answering machine is on they never leave a message.

I answered once and it seemed like there was someone at the other end and they hung up without saying anything. Then I called the number back and a recording began to say something about a survey at which time I hung up.

Anyone else have these lately?

555 is the fake prefix used for phone numbers on TV and in movies. In the old shows the phone numbers begin "KL5" which is actually 555.

Star 67 doesn't work if it's a cell caller. Go Green drives me nuts too.

Coincidentally to this thread, I just got two calls from 702 this AM. I didn't answer, and no voice mail was left.

My favourite trick is once I recognize a telemarketer's phone number, next time I will answer the phone "Your call has been redirected to the Federal Trade Commission, Telemarketing Complaints/Do Not Call Division." They usually hang up before I can even complete the sentence, and I never hear from them again.

If that doesn't work, you might want to also GO the the FTC website and enter your phone # into their Do Not Call registry at

Yes. We get them all. Really impossible, as far as I can tell, to do anything but check the caller I.D. and then not answer the ring. No "do not call" stuff goes through, evidently.

D8VANILLA, same here, same number. I think 555 prefix numbers are often fake, but I don't know how they are able to get the fake number on the caller ID screen. Scam for sure.

We get lots of calls from all the marketers named, plus carpet cleaning and offers of refis. We don't have ducts, we don't have A/C, we don't have carpeting, and we don't have a mortgage.

We get phone calls from all over, even ABC News and directory assistance and no one is ever on the phone. I called Cox about this and they gave me a code that does not work. It's very annoying. We need to switch to another carrier.

There are a lot of boiler room telemarketing companies in the 702 area code. The economy there was hard hit and people are desperate or jobs. Easy picking for telemarketing scum to hire.

Look up numbers on 800notes.com

It doesn't have to be an 800 number.

Find out what others are saying.

Las Vegas Casino/Hotel marketing calls offering you 'unbelievably' good deals... I think it was the Riviera yesterday!

I keep getting calls from 805.555.7896 but nobody is there. I've called the number and it's not even a good number. Is there some way a person can do this? Put, that phone number as the caller, but not really be the true number they are calling from??

ps- Yes, I hit *67 before dialing, which hides my own phone number from showing.

I've been getting phone calls this week from United Air and "Diane" for air duct cleaning after a hiatus of a couple of years.

I still have no air ducts. I'm still on the do not call list. I still wish these people would drop dead.

805-222-6591 - Go Green Energy Center has been driving us nuts with calls.

Usually nobody is on the line and after a few seconds a female voice says good bye and hangs up. If there is someone there, they don't pay any attention when you tell them to take you off of the list.

Someday maybe the Feds will actually do something about spammers like this, but I'm not holding my breath.

If you google the exact number (if you have caller id) there is usually a report of which company it is thats calling and comments from people who have been called.

Yes I have. I have family in Vegas. Thats the 702 code. Just curious but, finding out that others may or may not have calls coming in from 702, helps you how??? College paper?? Research??? Bored??

The number that keeps calling me, then hanging up, is (805)617-4427. The calls vary from once every couple of days to four or five times a day. I Googled the number and there are LOTS of people that this happens to. When you call the number back you get a recorded message saying "the mailbox is full." I have no idea what this scam is or whom to report it. Oh well, at least it's not the relentless "GoGreen" scammers.

Oh, yes---must be a telemarketer of some kind. We have call indicator on our line, you're right, never a message and line is open but no answer from the other end. I finally would just pick up the phone, count to three and hang up. That stopped them for almost a year--but now they must have re-set their call computer. Back to the 1-2-3 hang up for awhile!
