A brush fire on the northbound side of Highway 101 broke out Friday
afternoon. At about 1:15 p.m., as reported by Roger the Scanner Guy,
the fire began outside the guardrail on the shoulder of the freeway. It
was located between the Arrellaga on-ramp and the Mission Street off-
ramp.
SBFD Engines 1, 5 and 3 were dispatched and made quick work of
extinguishing the flames. The fire progressed onto the wooden sound
barrier, jumped the wall and started burning on the residential side of
the barrier. Fire crews attacked the flames from both sides of the
wooden wall.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. CHP was first on scene and
the officer was able to identify the point of origin of the fire. It appeared
that the fire stated in the leaf litter, which included sycamores leaves
and trash.
Smoke was thick, and noticed by residents throughout the
neighborhood. Traffic on the northbound 101 was affected for about 45
minutes while fire crews worked and made sure the fire was completely
extinguished. Cal Trans made repairs to the roadway.
