Hot Dog
updated: Mar 22, 2013, 10:01 AM

Once in a while I have a craving for a good hot dog. Where besides the deli at La Cumbre can one savor a good hot dog?

Plaza Deli is "Cool." They also have a huge array of different kinds of soda or pop, whatever term you prefer and a variety of unusual, tasty chips. The owner and staff are good and the place has been in business with local ownership for about 30 years. Recently I enjoyed one of those artisanal, heritage cherry soft drinks - good.
And sitting in the sun or shade patio is more pleasant than overlooking Costco parking lot.

236 - I know Costco advertises a choice between a hot dog and a polish dog, but I swear they take both out of the same vat, and for the life of me I have never been able to tell the difference between them.

To me, a "good hot dog" is the same as a "good tax audit" or a "good colonoscopy". One might be better than another, but none are "good".

Julia Child loved Costco hotdogs...that is, before Costco started making their own dogs, dropping the Hebrew National brand. I always figure if JC likes it, it must be pretty good.

That said, I understand that the pastrami dog served at Norton's is da bomb!

Hey Rex....Costco stopped using Hebrew National in 2009.

Something is about to happen at Costco that is much worse than a switch to Kirkland hot dogs.....

All Costco's will start selling Pepsi instead of Coke next month. Yucccchhh.

350, go inside and get the original formula Coke (that is sugar cane based). Avoid the HFCS based fountain sodas and you'll have most of a case left over for later.

Now, how do you chill a bottle quickly? Put it in the crab legs chiller while you're shopping for other items?

375 - Nice try but if I'm there for a Costco dog then either I'm not there to shop, or I'm eating the dog prior to going in so that my belly is full and I don't buy every piece of crap food that Costco sells. Plus it's a pain in the butt to wait in line and get your dog with a big cart load.

@350: It probably took me four years to realize that the Costco dogs had changed. I'm sure that for the first two or three years I was trying to convince myself that nothing was different. I do that sometimes when I don't want to face reality. And that's TERRIBLE news about the Costco switch to Pepsi from Coke. Now that's something I would have noticed immediately.

COMMENT 388458 agree helpful negative off topic

2013-03-22 04:04 PM

350,

I admit that I've never done that either. But given the choice of Pepsi, I probably would. I usually get the flavored Ice Tea and don't drink too much, and accept the fact it's a little bit of GMO-Bt-toxin laced HFCS. I just avoid it everywhere else.

It's important to eat foods we co-evolved with, and not these untested experimental foods the food industry throws at us. Cheating mother nature is risky, because food science doesn't know everything -- yet. It's simply not worth the risk.

Costco and its Hebrew Nationals or Kirklands or whatever it serves, is IT! With all the condiments you want and all the great cold water you can drink for $1.62 there is little to compare either as to taste or opportunity to enjoy. Bring your foreign tourists. Bring your friends and family. By all means picnic with the kids! Party and experience the place as a Disneyland type of friendly adventure! Picture trying to match the value? The Convenience? The Good Manners of Help Yourself and Bus Your Own? :-) And the ongoing, anytime, at-your-convenience, Human Parade. I'd buy stock in Costco but they're not really making money. Low prices and high quality, especially in better cuts of meat back in the back where the food samples are the only better deal than those great Costco Hot Dogs at $1.62. Note to Montecitans and Carpinterians: A Bus Trip to Costco and its Hot Dogs is an educational experience and an adventure. The Bus Fare is the Best Buy in Sightseeing Santa Barbara and if You Can Carry Loads of Groceries, the Sightseeing Bus Trip and the All-You-Can-Eat Hot Dogs are About Paid For by the Savings, :-) You may save much more than that on the prescriptions filled at Costco's Pharmacy which is Open-to-Everyone, Members or Not Members. :-) Enjoy an Adventure! Smile and Think, Think, Think as you Go. :-)

If we are just looking for good sausage, nothing finer than the German gem Brummi's on State Street - plus the side potato salad and her special sweet and fresh sauerkraut make this one of the best dishes in town. I love the bockwurst, but she also has other choices - all freshly made from her special recipes.

Costco Postscript:

Taking kids out there on the MTD bus is not only an educational adventure but a great training. Knowing how to catch a bus and pay your fare and read the Route Booklet and wend your way to Costco is great knowledge for both kids and adults to have.

Think of an emergency? What if you are stuck by an unexpected emergency? Knowledge of public transportation should be a part of every child's education.

And Costco itself is an education. Teach comparison shopping?

While Costco has the edge on hotdogs now, back in the '60s, Link's fast-food joint on E. Cabrillo near State Street--where the surry rental place is now--had the best hotdogs ever. They'd cut them in half lengthwise, then fry them. To this day that's how I cook mine at home.

I haven't eaten a dog other than Hebrew Nat'l, at home, in decades, though I'm curious about Nathan's, red hots, Coney Island dogs, etc. But when I do indulge, probably at least once a year, I'm still simply overwhelmed with salt. Oh well. Guess that's why beenie-weenies are so good. I like muenster on my dogs, and dislike sweet relish any where, any time. Uh oh, I've started a fight! Not to mention I put mayo on my dogs. Look out!
I'm a weisswurst and mustard gal at heart.

Yes, I've had a Costco hotdog. It's big and it's incredibly inexpensive. That's about it for me. I grew up in New York State. Hot dogs have natural casings that snap when you bite into them. They are grilled over charcoal at hot dog stands. The hot dogs are much thinner, and the skins have a delicious char and the dogs burst over those hot coals. Everyone to his own taste, but a fat boiled or steamed hot dog is just a fat, flabby hot dog. My home town hotdogs are charred and savory.

Totally with you, 929: the East Coast generally has much better hot dogs. CostCo's Polish are fine but if they're switching to Pepsi that ends it for me. As for Hebrew National, they came in last in a recent HuffPost survery (1st was Nathan's nat. casing.) And "thinker"bill, think again: Costco stock is up a little more than 6% so far this year.

Lazy Acres has some New York style dogs in the fridge case across from the butcher. Long, thin, and a nice snap when you bite through the casing. Taste great bbq'd at home, or dipped in cheese fondue.

I put more stock in a high-quality food website tasting than I do in HuffPo's.
Serious Eats rated Hebrew National #1. Ah ha, the catch:
"We went grocery shopping for the most nationally-available brands of all-beef franks, both skinless and with natural casing. Hot dogs get very regional—you have Sabrett in New York, Vienna Beef in Chicago—but we stuck to the easiest-to-find-anywhere dogs." But Nathan's didn't win.
