Dog Aggression Trainer
updated: Mar 22, 2013, 12:01 PM

There have been past suggestions for dog trainers and obedience classes, but can anyone recommend a trainer who specializes in dog aggression? The problem just started, so we don't think it's a lost cause. We'd like someone for an evaluation, advice and training.

Get the early full seasons, free from Library, of The Dog Whisperer with Caesar Millan ... Very very helpful.

However, the first thing is to have a Vet check out the dog for any health issues.

Out of curiosity, can you describe the aggression. Be specific. How old & what breed?
Towards other dogs? Towards you or other family members? Towards strangers?

Cesar Millan is a macho bully. There are vids on YouTube of him kicking dogs. Seriously. Not making this up.

BARK magazine had info on his terrible methods. If you want to abuse your dog, then Cesar's the trainer for you.

Otherwise, I'd try Joan. OR watch old episodes of "It's Me or the Dog." Victoria Stillwell's method's are gentle, kind, EFFECTIVE.

I second Wency - I know she worked (works?) with dogs at the humane society to try to rehab them...no personal experience tho for aggression - just went to her puppy class.

People will agree and disagree with Cesar Milan's technique, but it doesn't matter. if someone needs a trainer, they NEED a trainer, not a video tape. You cannot apply what you see on TV to your own dog and expect long-term and permanent success--too many variables having to do with living situation, temperament, routine and background are involved in a dog's behavior.
Then again, people think they are in a book group with Oprah or working with Dr. Oz to lose weight when they've never met either of them. To each their own.

Good for OP for addressing this ASAP, and yes get live professional help, agression is nothing to fool around with. I recommend John Sorosky at Camp Canine, he is a phenomenal trainer. I'd also second Wency. I believe both will tell you to start with a thorough vet check. Good luck, this can be very difficult, and dangerous if not handled properly.

I second theinquisitivecanine, Joan Hunter Mayer, absolutely, and with full enthusiasm. I know this from personal experience. I had a dog who became agressive to my other dog quite suddenly. I love Wency, and have gone to her before, but she did not have any advice as to how to deal with this problem other than to get a muzzle and separate the dogs. Joan used positive association methods, and, over time, the dogs did learn how to behave around each other. They were not traumatized and I was so grateful to Joan. I also second the advice to go to your vet to make sure there is nothing wrong. If the dog is in pain, it could make him agressive. Avoid domination, punishment methods as they will most likely backfire on you. Joan teaches you how to let your dog associate good things with situations that have provoked agression, gradually, without traumatizing the dog.

Caesar Milan is known in the industry for misunderstanding dogs to the point of being bitten. What you see on the videos is cut and pasted.
Be careful as one of the local trainers recommended above is known to fear legal repercussions from working with aggressive dogs and will recommend euthanasia. The solution will depend on the cause and you may need out-of-town trainers. Some types of aggression are not within the experience or knowledge of anyone local.

340P. Geez. Found that "Cesar Millan Dog Kicking" vid on YouTube. Not a professionally done vid, but it kept my attention. Watched it to the very end, where Millan really gives one dog a nasty nasty kick. What a jerk.

John Sorosky is great, but you have to BE John. But few people can be, majority of people cannot be. So contact Andrea Bratt k9sbehave@gmail. She is all positve reinforcement. John recommends Andrea. Joan Mayer is similar and is all positve reinforcement, too, but Andrea is better.

I recommended Wency because it was an aggression issue, which was short-sighted of me. Andrea is fantastic.
I'll still always recommend Wency, John and Andrea. Interesting point about "being" John, 865.

I would highly recommend Camp Canine. I had a fear aggressive dog who wouldn't let anyone near her and now after a little bit of time she will let anyone pet her which is huge for her! John and Anthony have done an amazing job with her. Her before and after video is on the website coffeeshopdogs. Her name is olive. They were the only ones who didn't tell me to put her down and now she has come a really long way! They will always be my first choice!
