Montecito Power Outage
updated: Mar 21, 2013, 9:46 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

The power has been out for almost an hour in the Upper Village of Montecito. Anywhere else? Anyone know what the estimate is for repair time?

Sorry to hear that. I'm stuck out here in IV where it never matters if the power is on or off. Ya know? Hope you get yours back soon.

Or just get a job in Montecito.

Ours flashed Downtown about that time. It seemed like a transformer blowing

The SCE web site has an outage map and details about all current outages, including this one.

Maybe it doesn't have much to do with jealousy as much as the knowledge that issues like this in Montecito rarely occur, and when they do, they are most-likely repaired more quickly.

P.S. Working 2 jobs still won't get a person out of I.V. these days.

The OP's question never did get answered.

FLICKA - The SCE web site has an outage map with details about this outage. Sometimes best to go to the source versus relying upon us gossips and our garden of misinformation. LOL!

110, I live in Montecito and our power is always going out. Every time it rains, every time the wind blows slightly. Been trying to get it addressed for many years, not really with any progress.

I can't speak to IV having never lived there, but I did live on the eastside and our power never seemed to be out.

I think this is all more about perceptions than anything, but what do I know?

I hope the OP gets their question answered (or better yet has their power back on now!)

I doubt any area gets "preferential" treatment.

Different areas have differing amounts of old equipment. And some areas are susceptible to wind, more than others.

Power came back just before 9:00 am today.

Edison's web site and fancy maps are useless if you don't have power or a smart phone. Duh.....

I don't live in Montecito or IV and the power was off at my place too. I talked to Edison and it was a down tree lim that blew some transformers. It had nothing to do with where you live. What the Edison worker (replacing the transformer) did say was that we would have less of these problems if money was spent to upgrade our power system from 3rd world to modern world electrical grid. I work with large amounts of power all the time and the problem is the old over taxed 3rd world power grid we have. When this type of outage happens it is hard for them to isolate because of the old equipment they have to work with.

Light a candle and enjoy!

182: It's ironic that the city of SB's "green" policy includes awards from the city for residential solar installations that aren't visible from the street and ignores power poles and above-ground cables that can't withstand storms and wind and that have transformers that frequently explode and release highly toxic PCBs. An important problem that could have been improved through use of RDA funds in the past, but not a good photo OP for local pols. Off topic for Montecito power-outs, but there was a flicker here on the mesa too this am that crashed my computer again.

The power went out on Virginia Road about 10 last night & came back on around 4 this morning. It used to happen a lot but not lately so that seems like progress to me. I just went to sleep.

I live in Montecito too, and our power went out last night at 945-1130pm; resumed briefly from 1130pm- 1230am; went out again from then until 10am. At last we have power again.

I kept my smart phone charged using my laptop battery, and that was how I found this thread, when I did a search on my phone browser for "Montecito power outage March 22, 2013", so I am very grateful for this forum!

As for the politicians being behind not upgrading the power lines out here in Grand Old Oprah Land, I think it's more accurately the NIMBY's. Look how long local residents have prevented anyone from upgrading the Miramar. If the politicians are supporting such heel-dragging it's only because their most vocal constituents harangue them until they do so.

SCE was once caught slush funding a system maintenance surcharge ( included in our monthly bills) instead of spending it on its intended purpose. Anyone believe that the PUC is correctly auditing SCE now to insure we get the maintenance we pay for ?

I was walking the dog last night around that time and saw a huge flash of light and heard a weird noise a second later - I was near Cleveland School - I bet the flash was the transformer blowing!!

SCE should just put the lines under ground, then the wind can blow all it wants, no power outage!

Underground power lines are very expensive. They also can fail due to heavy rains because the transformers are also underground. I lived in the West Beach area in the Ambassador tract that has underground power, and the power was out many times for long periods of time.
