Happy! Happy! Humpster Day Everyone! The weirdest thing happened to me the other day. I subscribe to Craig Smith's Blog, and get it all the time like clockwork but I didn't get the one a friend E-Mailed to me. When I read it I still didn't really understand why it wasn't sent to me Roger the Scanner Guy? In it Craig mentions reading a column by Cheri Rae, of the Santa Barbara View entitled "Santa Barbara isn't Santa Barbara anymore." talking about the homicide on Olive and recent incidents in her HOOD, some things about Silly Hall.
Then he goes on about coming here in the late 70's being a County Deputy DA He states he pretty much knew about every crime that was committed locally. That I find hard to believe, as not everyone gets caught committing crime. Maybe he had some inside information. He states about 12 murders are committed annually in the whole county, then and now. Then says the difference between then and now is back then you didn't have some guy named Roger listening to calls on a scanner and posting them on Edhat. Back then, most crime went unreported by the media. Now every time someone over on Milpas street looks Cross Eyed at someone else it gets posted on the internet. (I'm looking cross eyed at Craig's picture right now on Milpas Street.) The Crime rate is no greater now than it was back then it just gets covered more by the Media, According to Craig Smith.
I got here in 1980, I lived on the streets. There were some problems, but nothing like the problems of today. While we have always had gangs they usually fought each other and did not attack, and beat up your regular Joe. Well that is different now I don't think George Ied was in a gang. Since then and now there have been other citizens attacked, they were not beaten as bad obviously they are not dead. It does happen; once in a while someone dies. There were not as many homeless people then as there are now. The homeless people back then were not as much of a problem as they are today. Ex-offenders on parole, sex offenders, and people wanted from other states they might get extradited from their own state but not a few states away in California so they come here. These people, some part of our Homeless population here in Santa Barbara and everywhere else, cause problems wherever they go unless they go straight or sober up.
12 Homicides in the whole county back then maybe. But now they don't call all suspicious deaths homicides, either. Most homeless deaths which seem like obvious homicides are not investigated as such. Even if they are, no one is brought to Justice. Ya know the business of justice that is all it is anymore. Things are different now Craig, it's no longer the late 70's. There are more people, more condos, more business, more industry, a HELL of a lot more bars on State Street than there was in the late 70's. You're right about one thing though, Compared to other places Santa Barbara is not too shabby a place to live.
