Rocky Pine Ridge Sierra Club Hike

Last Saturday we had a record 27 people on our Rocky Pine Ridge Sierra Club hike!
Here are my photos (plus one from
hiker Christine)!
This is one of my favorite places to bring out of town visitors. A bit like the Playground with rocks to
play on, but much more of a trail. A truly beautiful garden of rocks and pine trees!
Rocky Pine Ridge is sometimes called the Rock Garden. It is near the junction of Gibraltar Road and East
Camino Cielo, not far from La Cumbre Peak.
The previous rain made the trail nice and grippy; when it is dry it can be quite slippery. And the freezing
temperature the night before left a small patch of snow for us!
We had a range of energy level and experience on the hike. So, after stopping at the usual end point,
more than half of the group continued on to the end of the ridge, past the trail, for some fun rock
hopping!
At this high elevation the flowers are slow to appear, but we did see some bush poppies. They are in the
same family Papaveraceae as the California poppies.
