Give it a rest PLEASE! Washington school on the Mesa has music blaring
and a woman screaming over a mic or a megaphone for the past three
hours..if I was making this much noise the police would be on my
doorstep! This is WAY TOO LOUD!

OP.... if you want a bag of lettuce you should go to the greengrocer not the plumber. Yelling at the Edhat community will not change what is going on down the street from you. Either call the police to complain so that they may go talk to the folks at the school, or gauge if you're being overly sensitive and not terribly neighbourly. OR take a walk down there yourself and ask to speak to the principal or head administrator to complain about their event.

Im glad you live next to just an elementary school that does not do many outside activities like that. I live behind SB and between football games, swimming meets, marching band, and the like, it is non-stop. I would assume it is the same if I lived next to SM or DP. You wanted to live next to a school.

The school jog-a-thon was scheduled for Friday, but due to a forecast of rain, it was moved to Tuesday. Maybe noise is handled better on a Friday? This jog-a-thon happens once a year and is an amazing fundraiser where the kids get to help raise the money, and work hard training for the run. Most of the neighbors have a connection to the school (have children or grandchildren or friends that attend), and probably donated money. Please put up with the once-a-year noise, or vote to raise taxes so the school doesn't need to fundraise. (From a past Washington parent and jog-a-thon committee member.)

I did not know what the event was..all I could hear was a woman screaming over a mic for a really long time...I was not screaming on ed hat...however...there was certainly no peace this morning...hope none of the kids sustained ear damage...some of you ed hatters are too ready to jump down some ones throat...I was not complaining about an event...I was affected by really loud, continuous noise. The amplification was way too loud..that's all...hope they raised a lot of $$$$$

General email/posting known fact is using ALL CAPS IS YELLING. We can jump all over the poster the same way the poster jumped all over the unknown sound, but the reall issue here is our lack of community. When I moved to SB from LA 17 years ago, I told people I was moving here for the sense of community SB offered. I seem to missing that. I would like to think that I would have asked my neighbor what the sound was, or even might have known that a local jog-a-thon was occuring (even though I don't have kids). We need to come together as a community, people.

Countdown till ranting on Edhat about the inaugural weekly sunset trail run series set for Eling's Park starting tomorrow evening. As a park neighbor and a runner I must say I'm excited about what could be a potentially superior even to the played out Nitemoves! No doubt though I will read something on here about how the event is ruining someones life! Welcome to SB.

Why do schools need to raise money? I thought that's why they raised the taxes. Oh yeah, that went to pensions not to the kids.

Before I move into a house (or apt or condo) I check out the area. Schools, parks, businesses, hospitals all have a certain amount of noise and traffic that are associated with the nature of what goes on in those places. Certain noises bother me more than others, so I avoid those kinds of neighbors. The op has learned that living by a school might not be a good idea for himself/herself due to noise associated with being near a school. @864 give it a rest, your assumptions are proven false over and over again...with relation to our sb schools.

I'm curious if anyone who attended the event also felt that it was too loud. Sometimes special events do go overboard on the volume.

At least this is a better fundraiser than selling overpriced candy and giftwrap. All of the money goes to the schools. When the candy kids come around I just give them a couple bucks and ask them to donate it directly.

Monroe School had their jogathon last week. It was very loud in my house as I live alongside the playground. However, I took the opportunity to spend the day at the beach with my dog. No big deal at all. And before I left, it was obvious that the kids were absolutely loving it! Can kids get out of hand and too noisy, even during a regular school day? Yes. But they are just kids enjoying themselves. I don't have kids but I remember what it was like to be one.

Dear Poster: I agree with 890. And just because a school is having a "special event" doesn't mean the volume needs to be cranked up to unbearable decibel levels. You have my sympathy. You'd better believe that more than 1/2 the "Ok, take a chill pill" advocates on this thread wouldn't be so "tolerant" if they had to listen to amplified anything for hours. Next time, call the police and have the school turn down the volume. Police will respond to loud noise complaints, any time of day or night.

School jog-a-thons are an incredible source of revenue to our schools and support those programs the public schools can no longer afford- including art, music, P.E., after school programs and teacher's aids. Instead of complaining, support your local school by pledging a student a per lap donation and watching that child run his or her little heart out to the "loud" music. Cheers to Washington Elementary! Now for some real fun, come on out to the Rose Garden by the Mission the morning of April 12th and support Roosevelt Elementary's 32nd Annual Rose Run!

This reminds me of the guy who lived across from Shoreline Park and complained to the city about the noise of the big kites people would fly there. They laughed at him. He finally moved. Ha! All that view and fun he left behind.

Maybe next year you can walk over and CHEER them on, instead complaining about it on line. Those kids work so hard and run there hearts out. I would think you could be a little tolerant for ONE morning a year. BTW you chose to live by an elementary school.

I agree that these are good events for the kids, but why does there have to be amplification at school functions? We didn't have that when I was a kid and it isn't fair to the neighbors.

I'm sure that if you called the principal, that your concern would be addressed. Maybe the speaker was too loud. If you don't like the nosie from a school, don't live next to a school. We hear the noise from Earl Warren sometimes, but the rest of 95% it's fine. Schools have to raise money because SB does not get the funds like they do on the East Coast. It's the fund rasing that makes our schools above the rest of the state.

Call the school and ask them to alert you to upcoming events so that you might be ready. Explain to the school you can't tolerate loud noise and they should comply, they don't want to go against the neighbors. So, when it happens, go out, take a trip, get earplugs, turn up your TV/radio.

To #383864: A generation ago more than 1/2 of workers had defined pension plans. Now less than 7 % do. Somehow we have allowed the gains from increased technological proficiency, economy of size, and international trade agreements to all accumulate to the .1% of the population, while jobs, job security, and pensions disappear. The fact that teachers - historically the lowest paid of the professions - still have pensions seems to result in teachers being blamed for the woes of the economy. How does this make sense? Citizens need to think deeply about the workings of our - yes, our - government. It reflects our values.

It may not be that the noise is so very loud, just that it carries, maybe depending on the breeze. We live a fair distance from the Carp Middle school, when the football field was still there we heard Friday night games. Wasn't really bothersome.

A sense of community is great and I'm all for being tolerant of a reasonable amount of discomfort and getting along with neighbors - but why is it a given that any such activities have to be accompanied by such loud noise that the decible level is akin to a jet taking off? I think those who want people to chill are people who are so accustomed to unbearable noise that they are deaf because they attend so many events where there is this amount of noise polution
