Comet Sighting
updated: Mar 10, 2013, 8:11 PM

By Chuck McPartlin

Here are some shots of Comet Pan-STARRS, taken from a turnout on Old San Marcos Road just after sunset. The comet is definitely visible in binoculars, but I wouldn't call it easy. It's not a naked-eye object for me, anyway. Sunset was at 7:03 PM.

The first shot is a view down over Goleta while waiting for the comet to show, taken at 7:50 PM PDT. Nikon DX VR AF-S 18-55mm lens at 55 mm, f/5.6 for 3 seconds at ISO 800.

The first view of the comet was at 8:01 PM, Nikon DX VR AF-S 55-300 lens at 200mm, f/5.0 for 2 seconds at ISO 1600.

The last view of the comet was at 8:05 PM, same settings as the first view, but a 5 second exposure.

So, you have to look soon after sunset, and you don't get to see it for very long. Things should improve considerably by Tuesday and Wednesday when the Moon joins the scene to make it more interesting.
