Hawk Close-Up
updated: Mar 09, 2013, 8:11 PM
By Chuck Cagara
The first photo shows the distinct tail bands of the juvenile bird. These bands will turn a solid rusty red as
the hawk matures, thus differentiating it from the Cooper's Hawk which looks nearly identical in its juvenile
stage.
Note that in two photos the "nictitating membrane" is seen over the eye while the hawk is scratching its
head. This membrane, present in most birds and many animals, allows the eyeball to be moistened and
protected.
A White-Tailed Kite was also observed soaring high overhead.
