Guy has an old truck over there that he fires up at odd hours and the thing backfires to no end, confirmed.

Not every loud noise is guns.

All these reports of shots fired, but no news about it. Makes me wonder if people actually know what gun shots sound like.

And it's not like in the movies

I actually live near Bregante Lane where a man was shot literally outside my back door in November of last year...so yes, I do know what gun shots sound like. I did call the police.

Sure glad we're putting our resources into the DUI checkpoints every weekend! That ought to show the gangs we mean business....oh wait, never mind.

just because you've heard one gun shot doesn't mean you can immediately decipher between a gun shot and backfire... different calibers make different sounds.. pew pew, bang bang, pow pow, braaat braaat

besides cars backfiring, what other things make similar noises? Fireworks? What else?

I live in an area near Voluntario and Soledad (they are parallel) and heard something at about that time last night but it didn't sound like a gunshot to me. It sounded like something big and metallic falling over or off of whatever it was on. I imagine confirmed, that some fat raccoon nudged something that slipped on a wet surface and fell.

Maybe someone was skeet shooting? Or maybe just taking care of the overwhelming pigeon problem on that end of town under the cover of darkness and rain?

I've never heard so many reports of cars backfiring as we've had here in recent months. LOL. Implausible.

Gun fire much more likely.

It's pretty rare to even find a car that backfires anymore. Newer cars have fuel injectors and computer controlled fuel systems that prevent the car from backfiring. Probably gunfire, not sure why everyone's searching for some other explanation -- it's the most likely cause.

I thought I was hearing things last night, but there were 3 distinct shot-like sounds at that time (I was awake feeding an infant, so definitely wasn't dreaming up the sounds). My first thought was gun shots, but I tried to reassure myself that they "must be something else". They were not handgun sounds. Scared me.

Movin' on up, to the East Side. To the deluxe apartment in the ghetto. Lucky you haven't been beat to death walking home from work. Count your blessings.

I spoke to a friend who said the gunshots came from Milpas street, which is pretty close to where I live. Bottom line is this; I've lived in that neighborhood for over 25 years and it's always been a fairly safe place to live but it's getting worse and worse with all the gang activity that takes place, I've got a teenage son who I worry about while he's out skateboarding.....maybe time to relocate because I don't see them going anywhere....

The "Ostrich Factor" at work - "Oh, it's only a little car backfire. Couldn't possibly be gunfire in our little paradise."

Wake up, kids - we're not in Kansas anymore!

live by more mesa i hear what sounds like shots some may be but others are like firecrakers.. and yes sheriffs usually in area so they check it out we also have coyotes that run in neighborhoods and others shoot bb guns or air guns(sound like shots but just air).. my daughter used to live on eastside just off milpas by taco bell we'd hear what sounded like shots all the time. got to where we slept on floor on mattress.. gang members lived upstairs and next door.. so rivals at times would do drive byes police called and sometimes showed up right away and other times maybe 45 minutes later.. call 911 if you hear shot or even what you think sound like shots, better safe then wake up and step out your door to a person shot in front of your house..
