Santa Barbara Scenic Drives
updated: Mar 08, 2013, 10:19 AM
I am interested in taking a friend from out of town on a nice drive in
Santa Barbara *Saturday/Sunday Evening.
Can someone recommend a route (I'd appreciate it if the
recommendations were informative, i.e. Start at Mission Canyon Rd etc)
Thank You!

Highway 192 all the way from SB (start at Mission Canyon and go thru Carp). Also, from Hot Springs exit along Cabrillo Blvd & the beach, then along Shoreline, left on Cliff, and through Hope Ranch.

Before 662's route, start at the Mission, take APS to the Old Coast Highway, take a left and continue to Coast Village Road. And after 662's route, from Las Positas turn left on State, right on 154 all the way to Los Olivos for a late lunch and winetasting.

Head up Gibraltar road...when you get to East Camino Cielo you can go right which leads down into Pendola or left which leads towards La Cumbre Peak, painted cave, and then maybe head to Cold Springs Tavern. Have Fun! Not for the faint of heart...My Grandma cried when I took her on this drive!

Drive along east mountain drive and go take a look at the house being built up there on Theodore Roosevelts property its being built to look like a stack of books. you cant go onto the actual property but you can take a look from the street its an intersting sight! and a very good view of santa barbara. You can google The Hermitage Santa Barbara at 20 and see some pics of his interesting property and get a little history on him. I took my Grandmother up there she is from Iowa she thought it was the best thing ever!

A lot depends on what you find interesting. I love APS, then Foothill/Stanwood/Sycamore (Rt192) to Mountain Drive and then down through Montecito to Cabrillo and the beachside and on past the Mesa to Hope Ranch and back on State St to Constance, the Mission and down Chapala into town. It's an awesome motorcycle ride but challenging and tiring to drive but very scenic...

That is, Theodore Roosevelt Gardner II's property, not to be confused with our former President Teddy Roosevelt. More correctly, it is Theodore Gardner's property and it is cool, but hard to see a lot from the road. Mountain Drive is great, I second the trip up Gibraltar and you could add a visit to the Vedanta Temple on Ladera Lane in SB, via the 192. That would make for a lot of driving taking up more than a couple of hours. If you want a whole loop of it, you could start up Painted Cave Road to East Camino Cielo, over La Cumbre peak, down Gibraltar, turning west on to Mountain Drive all the way to San Ysidro, (Mtn Dr is cut off through SY Ranch) west on 192 to go up Park Lane, across Bella Vista, down Ladera to the Temple, then back to SB via 192. Drive slow, watch for others and enjoy the views! Even better by bicycle, but that requires a lot of fitness.

Yeah, show them the REAL Santa Barbara- Start at Carrillo and San Andreas to Mission, left on Gillespe to Micheltorena, over the 101 to Bath, up Bath to Anapamu, To Milpas, down Milpas to the Roundabout to Carpenteria St, to Canada, Rt on Canada, Lft on Indio Mureto, to Salinas St. Salinas to the Roundabout to Montecito St, Down Montecito (Take a break at the Eastside Pennywise Store and take in the "locals") Then back to Milpas up to Guitererez all the way to State St. Then up State to Haley and Right on Haley. Get a Burrito at Rincon (Haley and Vera Cruz)

154 is always amazing, but please don't go wine tasting and drive it!!! So dangerous for you and others on this road. They have all sorts of fun tours that do the driving for you. Keep our roads safe people!!!

If you want to stay in town, drive the Riviera, Hope Ranch, Montecito, and city college overlooking the harbor. Out of town, the flowers should be good on Figueroa Mt. -- you can go up Happy Canyon, over the top, and down into Los Olivos. Maybe stop for wine somewhere.

For non-drinkers, make a right off 154 on the way down at Old San Marcos Road. Great views of the ocean as you wind carefully down to Cathedral Oaks.
