Gaviota Pass Hiking
updated: Mar 06, 2013, 5:31 PM

How would one hike along the Gaviota pass on the 101 Southbound side? Where do you park and is it private property near that old bridge to Lompoc, I see a bunch of old trails while on the bus to work.

I used to do it, 25 yrs ago. If I remember correctly, you get off at highway one, go over that old bridge and there's a gate. We hiked up from there and ended up at the top of the rock out croppings that can be seen on the left, above the rest stop, from NB101; spectacular views :)

2104.... you're talking about the Wind Cave. I believe it's mentioned in SantaBarbaraHikes.

OP... head towards Gaviota State Beach and just before turning leftish into the park continue on towards the right. As soon as you come to a sharp turn look for a large widening of the road for parking, stop and park. Look for a gate and follow the beaten path off the asphalt. The view from the Cave is priceless and you'll soon discover the reason for its name.

113 is correct, you can also take Hwy one exit towards Lompoc, and at the first opportunity to turn left, take it, and another left past the school...drive until you hit a locked gate, park and explore from that side too.

Sierra Club often makes this hike. Check the Independent or their website for times.

Do yourself a favor and say you did, and don't go!

Couldn't you just stay on the railroad tracks?

There's a cesspool of a hot spring just up the way too.

@159P why would I do that?

2192... you're on the wrong side of the street and going in the opposite direction.

Stay on the RR tracks and you will soon be trespassing in Hollister Ranch after already trespassing on Union Pacific property.
