Balcony Rail Installation
updated: Mar 04, 2013, 10:22 AM

I'm looking for someone who can install railing on my balcony using newer, composite materials. Preferrably someone who is resonably priced. This deck/balcony had a railing before and has some amount of termite/dry rot damage too.

You also need a building permit and an engineered design. Railings are big liability and life safety issues and are no joke. Material choice is yours but must meet the minimum height (42 in.) and strength required (50 lbs per lin. ft cumulative load and 200 lbs point load anywhere on railing in any direction). Don't try to get around this, it can come back to bite you.

You need a licensed contractor who knows what you can and can't do and can pull the permits for you. I can highly recommend Mark Magen who is the sole proprietor of Mark Hagen Construction. He is a really nice guy. Reasonable and very easy to deal with. His number is 570-8776.

You do not need a permit to replace an existing railing. It falls under repair. But do get someone with experience.

Haywards has displays of composite railings. Channel City Lumber in Goleta might also be interesting. Perhaps you can visit and ask them for referrals.

Dave Eggli, 805-966-6377 works with a variety of "engineered polymer materials" for railings, fences, decks, etc. He did a strikingly nice job with ours, and the building inspector loved them too. Twelve years later, they still look fantastic.

Get someone licensed or experienced or both (and I'm not usually one to say that). Some of the newer polymer materials have no structural strength. You need someone up on codes and materials to do this job.

I would be happy to take a look.
I am licensed, local, reasonable and well qualified.
