Budding Songwriter
updated: Mar 03, 2013, 8:52 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

My daughter is 12 and has been writing "songs" for a few months. This all started after she asked for and we bought her a very nice keyboard. She didn't want keyboard lessons though, insisting that they would be boring. She has heard horror stories from her friends about doing scales for hours and playing 3 Blind Mice over and over.

She comes up with some pretty decent lyrics for a kid and has an idea in her head of the chords/tempo that she envisions for those lyrics. I am not qualified to help her in any way but I'd like to connect her with someone who can help her pursue this. Her philosophy in life is: "I can't succeed unless I try." She is a very hard worker and self motivated. Who am I to dash those dreams? Any suggestions? Any local songwriters work with kids?

I teach Songwriting at Santa Barbara Middle School, with 11-15 year olds.
Let's talk and maybe I can give you some ideas.

RockShop Academy. I went to their benefit concert last summer at DP ranch and what they teach the kids is unbelievable. The instructors are former members of Dishwalla.

I don't really have any feedback (other than I agree rock shop is awesome - I know quite a few kids involved with them, and they really are fantastic, and it's not just all rock). But I just wanted to say you are a great parent for nurturing your kids dreams.

Spencer the Gardener would be good and is known to have worked with kids like yours. He himself never had lessons, but is an accomplished musician living the lifestyle of his dreams. I have no contact info, but you can go on the google search for him. He's in Santa Barbara.

If your child is a girl you should look into the local chapter of Girls Rock! They just did a big benefit show... rock and roll camp for girls, awesome, educational and empowering. A great thing for everyone involved.
