updated: Mar 02, 2013, 8:11 PM
Does anyone have any personal experience and can recommend a good therapist that specializes in CBT
(cognitive behavioral therapy)? More specifically, I have chronic pain.

Several years ago I saw Judy Villa and was very happy with her help. Yes, she used CBT as one tool, and I found it helpful.

I do hope you find some excellent recommendations. I too would like to find one that specializes in overcoming extreme phobias.

I worked with John Fox years ago. He's awesome. Stronger and more directive than most counselors, but I was looking for that. Once we'd identified my issues we did hypno type therapy and he made me revisualization tapes. Address: 19 E Mission St Santa Barbara, CA 93101 Telephone: (805)687-1733

776, CBT and EMDR can both help with extreme phobias. I'm sorry I don't have a recommendation for you, but don't give up hope and try to seek out someone who can help with both therapies if you're looking for help for phobias. Good luck!

look up california association of marriage and family therapists, santa barbara chapter, and search for a counselor with the particular skill set you seek. or try psychology today on line, santa barbara therapists, trained in cbt. there are probably many these days, as that is a new popular modality.hypnotherapy, emdr, and meridan tapping therapy, eft, are also helpful with those issues. you might also try the warm therapy pool at cottage hospital rehab institute for chronic pain, it is open to the public and very helpful with lifestyle management. i make these suggestions as a local therapist, who also suffers from long time chronic pain. best of luck.

You can also check out the local Licensed Clinical Psychologists in the area at www.sbpsychologists.org Michael Beiley, Ph.D. does excellent CBT with Anxiety (Panic, OCD, Phobias and Social Anxiety). But definitely check out the website above. You will find over 100 PhD-level professionals, quite a few who specialize in CBT.

Due to your question, I just found out that SB's Jerome Yoman moved to Beaverton OR. He was good. Also, I have a family member who is a skeptical scientist and was helped by EMDR. Sorry I couldn't help more; LeahKing has good advice.

If it's doable for you, I highly recommend SB (now Cottage) Rehab Institute chronic pain outpatient program. Though I worked with it before they had to become Cottage to survive. That's how I met Dr. Yoman. I'm no longer familiar with the program --- seems it no longer exists, but there's this: http://www.sbch.org/tabid/822/Default.aspx oh well.

935, EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing. I can't post a link since I'm not a member on Edhat but if you google it you can find out more about the process. It's really simple and strangely, it works really well for phobias. It really downgrades your fear. There are a lot of people in town who practice it, just finding the right fit for you is key. Good luck!

Hi OP. You asked a question on a public Internet forum. No, "we" cannot stick to the topic or original request. That's just how the Internet works; the Internet, let alone Edhat, is an open forum and often off-topic, even unpleasant. Hope you got some good info out of this thread!
