No More Nudes
updated: Mar 02, 2013, 5:30 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

I just moved into this neighborhood and want to take my kids to explore More Mesa but I do NOT want to stumble upon the nude beach with the kids. I have been searching online and cannot figure out which direction to go when we get to the bottom of the stairs to avoid this. Can someone please let me know? I know that lots of edhatters are familiar with that area and somehow, although I'm a native to SB, I have NEVER been to this beach! Thanks for your help :)

Don't let your kids go to More Mesa alone..I went there when I was younger alot of weirdos on the cliffs. It's been along time so besides saying it's between Hendrys and Goleta I wouldn't know exacley how to get there.

There's nudes in both directions, can you really imagine a cop climbing down all those stairs just to bust someone for being nude in the wrong place/direction? Nope.

Why would you want to go to the beach at More Mesa if you're not a nudie? For the work involved you're better off in Summerland, Butterfly or Miramar.

If you're looking for nudies note the creeps at the top of the bluffs.

OP here. The beach is a few blocks from my house, that's why we want to go there, it's walking distance! I will go with my kids, just wanted to know what direction to turn. My son is 12, daughter is 14 and no, I don't want us to go down there and walk into the nude beach section but we do think that we should be able to also enjoy the beach.

OP, go for a walk by yourself and scout the area if you're concerned about whether it's suitable for your kids.

You should be able to do it, it's your right and those who are nude are breaking the law.
But we live in a world where practically speaking, things often are not how we want them or how the law or morales says they ought to be.
Have you considered talking to a psychologist or clergy person to get advice? It may be a good idea to teach your kids now, while they will listen (!) how to deal with this kind of thing. Maybe someone whose guidance you trust can weigh in.
Taking them to that beach may allow you to be a role model when presented with uncomfortable "scenery." They may learn the wrong message by you going out of your way to avoid.
Then again, if you don't plan to let them go alone, then better maybe to just prohibit it all together, even at a good time or in the supposedly OK direction.
If it were me, I'd skip it entirely. At least in the old days there was a chance of there not being perverts. Now, with the internet every pedophile in a 100 mile radius may be there.
You are a good parent for trying to figure this out.

We live in a society where nudity is a no no and violence is OK.

I'd rather see an old man naked than two thugs fighting.

One causes less trauma for all concerned.

No one has suffered from PTSD seeing a naked body.

The original "nude beach" was accessed via Puente Rd... or at least the one I have known for 45 years. Maybe there's another one more towards More mesa that I'm not aware of.

I go to More Mesa a lot. No "weirdos" on the cliffs; few nudists during the week. When they are there, they are usually to the right--a quite a way from the stairs. Also, they are sunbathing, so if you keep your eyes straight ahead, you won't be unpleasantly surprised. Weekends are busy. I was there this morning. Lots of families both directions and not a nude bottom (or front) in sight. I have taken my kids there many times & never had an encounter with a nudist. Go have fun. It's a great beach!

Thanks 741! I have heard it's a gorgeous beach and I want to be able to enjoy it, especially when we can walk there. I am surprised how many people here were offended at my asking and responded in negative ways instead of saying which way to avoid... I didn't say violence was okay with me because it's not, just that I want to avoid a situation that I am not comfortable with.

For the most part the nudists stay to the right of the stairs. There aren't many anymore. Maybe a couple dozen on a really nice weekend day. I'd be willing to bet that your kids have already seen much, much worse things on the internet. A nude body isn't really shouldn't be that big a deal.

Not like like the '70s when there were dozens of folks down there naked every day. Now very few, to the right during week days they are pretty harmless. The mesa is a great place to explore. the beach is a bit of a treck for a lot of people so there are not a lot of weirdos.

the reason that is the nude beach is because you really really want to be there, you have to walk a LONG distance to get to the cliff and then you have hike down quite a ways to get to the beach. This is not a place to go for a casual day with the kids, it is out of the way which is why it became the nude beach after everyone was at Sharks in Montecito. Sharks was easy to get too and got very crowded.

OP here... Lol, you guys have to keep in mind something - EDHAT creates the title to the post, not the poster... you don't know me and you don't know my parenting style and frankly, it's weird how people are so offended at a simple question. Thing is, I am just trying to figure out which direction people tend to go nude at that beach and which direction has people who don't prefer to go nude. It's not complicated, nor should it offend anyone. But I guess that people are that insecure that they have to take offense at the little things in life. I feel sad for those of you and really, your overreactions are weird to me, I don't get it.

As a kid we knew that there was a nude beach to the left of East Beach and there was another one to the far right of Hendry's and there was one somewhere in Carp or Summerland, not sure, but of course we tried to peak at the one near East beach and imagine my discomfort when my brothers & I walked over there to see a naked man masturbating on the beach. I am certain that not all people that tan in the nude at the beaches do that but I still would like to avoid that. I have lived in SB all my life and paid local taxes here since I was a teen and have the right to enjoy the beach near my home. I will go to that beach and perhaps, just to appease the posters here who are so concerned, I will call the police an hour or two BEFORE I go each time and report nudists that are having sex and doing drugs down there, that way the police can just go clear it out before we go. :)

Ok, I get that if you have kids you might not want to expose them (no pun) to things you have to explain and it's absolutely your right to parent how you want in this regard.

I don't personally think naked bodies are so offensive, but that wasn't your question was it? :)

The nude beach at More Mesa is directly right of the mesa (if you're looking out to sea from the mesa) and extends for about a half mile or so.

The people who go to these beaches (there's one in Carp, too - between Rincon and the bluffs closer to the seal rookery) seem harmless. As a surfer, I pass by them nearly every day and they're not weird or creepy. I've never seen anything untoward, let alone sexual activity or drug use. I think some people here are sadly making up stuff to scare you or that helps their agenda in some way. :(

The assumption that calling the police ahead of time with false accusations to clear out a beach for your private use is laughably elitist. Anyone who has actually gone to the beach knows that if you lay out pretty far from the stairs, no one can actually tell you are nude unless they get closer, which is plenty enough time for you to cover up anyway. Gotta love a mom on a power trip.

Not on a power trip, just was ferreting out the people with an agenda lol, never was trying to get the beach alone, just wanting to go to explore it. Perhaps the antagonistic and negative folks on here that were trying to discourage me and my kids from sharing the beach with you? 864, if that's what people do then I'm good with it. You can call me names but the rest of your response was actually reassuring :)

OP Good luck - I understand - a decade or so back I took my preteen grandkids to a couple of movies I stupidly thought would be okay, only to be really taken aback at love making scenes that seemed way too advanced for a "family" movie - and I was one of the folks who used to go nudie beaches back in the 70s so I don't shock that easily.

JULIAN: As for no-one getting PTSD from seeing anyone nude, well; just thank heaven I don't walk arouind like that now! :-)

It's like moving next door to a farm then complaining about the roosters and compost smell.

Mainstream media serves up so much sex and raunch,'they should be vaguely aware of what a human body looks like. Do you cover their eyes when passing Abercrombie and Fitch, Victoria's Secret?

Forewarn the kids when u go to the beach. The no-tan-line group is pretty tame. Safer viewing than IV beaches drunken necking string thong sand rolling. Go toward SB for best results. There's a neat tar seep in the bluff close to orchid lane, but you have to go by the nekkids. Go at low tide.

This is such a fascinating thread...Mom can't figure out that she should simply pre-scout the area to determine if the scenery is suitable for her kids and all the off topic comments that don't address her question about which way to turn at the bottom of the stairs. Seems to me that though convention might put most nudies on one side or the other of an imaginary divide...it's just that...And so on any given day, a nudie might not be where they're "supposed" to be. Here's my solution. Post the kids on the top of the Mesa with a cellphone and a pair of binoculars to enjoy some great bird-watching while Mom goes down to scout matters out and, if the beach is free of objectionable vistas, she can call the kids down and enjoy the beach as she wishes. What to do when a nudie shows up after the fact is another concern to consider.

Ha ha ha, enjoyed "most" of the comments even tho not on topic, but I have to add that when my 19 yr old son came up to visit me (I live on bluffs overlooking More Mesa) with his friends, it turned out they all knew about the nude beach (I guess from coming up to the party school on holidays) and couldn't wait to go thru my gate to the overlook. They soon came back very disappointed saying "...nothing but a bunch of 40 year olds down there". I think they were expecting 20 year old models or something and 40 seemed old at that time but surely they were older. I've seen them mostly with unobtrusive behavior but a few times not so pretty, I stay on Goleta beach now.

Based upon certain comments by other posters, one would get the idea that most nudists are perverts, and that the bluffs and beach near More Mesa are filled with perverts and pedophiles.

I am NOT making a statement. I do, however feel like putting a rhetorical question out there for other edhatters to ponder.

Why not do a research, going back over the past 40 years, as to how many instances of reported pedophile acts, or attempted acts took place at or near More Mesa Beach, compared against how many have been reported at Catholic churches, schools and seminaries in Santa Barbara over the same period of time.

Is it just possible that the beach nudists by and large, adhered to a better set of morals?

There used to be a man who sunbathed nude at Hendry's under the Wilcox property. He was usually cool, when he saw people approaching he would turn over onto his stomach. One day I was walking with my young daughters, and when he saw us getting closer, he actually turned over onto his back and spread his legs wide open. Disgusting. I tried to hurry my kids past without bringing it to their attention, and of course they noticed, with curiosity, and wondered why there was a naked man on the beach. I was livid. I called the police afterwards just to ask how one might report this type of thing, and basically, they just said you have to call right when you see it, and the police have to get there and witness it. Not going to happen. So, yes, there are cool nude sunbathers, and there are disgusting nude sunbathers. It's natural to want to protect one's children for as long as one can.
