Shots were fired at 5:30 am March 2 2013-very near my house-Foothill
rd-Foothill lane area...
One loud blast outside my bedroom window-or very near-it may have
been in or near the creek bed and the sound traveled closer? Then two
more shots-moving farther away with each shot. Sounded like a rifle or
single shot weapon.
Called 911-they did not even ask my name-maybe traced the call?
Know where my house is? We just moved up to the Foothill area near the
SB Tennis Club. Our drive way is 2 blocks long-more like a small road...so
we are slightly remote.
What is the SBPD protocol for this kind of thing?
I mean-it sounded like it was just outside my window and it could have as
easily been coming toward my house. There was no yelling. But because
the first shot was a close range "blast"-and then the next two shots sort of
implied someone either running or driving-away.
We just moved up here from downtown SB. We would hear gunfire every
once in awhile...but not this close to our home. It feels really exposed up
here-because there are no fences the properties are linked on a winding
drive the house about us-is my guess--but what I do to protect me and my
family? Ya know-cause what if the sort of "rowdy" family above had one
too many shots of Jagger-and someone lost a bet...and who knows ?
Any ideas on how to find out what it was...or if the police actually
investigated...or maybe-hell-who knows...is there hunting up on Foothill
near Los Canoas?

You still have the right to have a pistol or rifle at home. I suggest you might want to get one as it could take 10 or more minutes for the police to arrive. Until they arrive, you need to be able to defend you and your family.

It's hunting season in the foothills. Probably just someone gunning for coyotes whose ancestors were not here first. Are you in the county now? Should call SB Sheriff's Office?

A cat was shot last week on Ontare Road. I don't believe it is legal to discharge a firearm in city limits, but there are many tracts of County land off Foothill.

Have you talked to your new neighbours? Ask them if this sort of thing has happened before or if there is a house with gun nuts who think nothing of shooting at coyotes in the middle of the night... even if it means shooting towards other people's houses. Your neck of the woods is pretty isolated and off the beaten path so the only tweakers and miscreants passing by are going to be neighbours or their visitors. 0616... I'm sure that's what Oscar Pistorius thought too before he realized it was his girlfriend he just shot, not some intruder. Seriously, John Wayne is long gone.

I called 911 one night when I heard shots being fired, had to argue with the operator who was telling me it was most likely a car backfiring, I explained that I had fired riffles and been around a backfiring car and know the difference, it continued with at least 3 more shots.....no one ever came to investigate....next day, there were light fixtures on neighboring gates shot out.... And no, I do not want to own a riffle or pistol.

Shooting coyotes only backfires, literally. If you take out one coyote, new coyotes fill the void. You want to get rid of them, but you actually stimulate population growth by thinning a pack--their natural imperative, as any species', is to repopulate. Problem is the new ones who step in are usually younger and dumber, so you end up with worse nuisance problems. Vex them instead. Check out Project Coyotes brochure on how to keep coyotes away for good by vexing or hazing them: http://www.projectcoyote.org/CoyoteHazingBrochureFieldGui de.pdf

Well I've been out pretty much all day, as this is the beginning of the month and I have to pay rent, bills, etc I did carry my scanner heard a few of the regular calls missed why Foot Hill is closed accident? Or did the clown that shot at the cat miss? Who in the Hell shoots cats around here anyway? What is up with that cruel jerk! Easy pickins I guess..

So hermes do you consider the cops to be "gun nuts" as well? Because they have a tank armed gunships (a term for any helicopter carrying weapons) fully automatic machine guns. And don't forget that Chris Dorner was a cop and he actually went nuts.

If they own firearms privately, yes. I do have problems with the BEARCAT (it's supposed to be printed like that, right?) and the over-extension of police power, but I wouldn't call someone who is legally obligated to handle a firearm as a result of their occupation a "gun nut". A private citizen has no legal requirement to carry a firearm, and I see no reason to own one outside of long rifles for hunting and even then I have serious misgivings.

So during that 10 minutes or longer that you have to wait for the police to arrive at your house, you are going to be defenseless. Good luck with that. I hope your family is never threatened by a drug crazed cretin or someone that wants to rob and/or rape your family.

If you can only talk in hyperbole, then we have nothing to discuss. Here's one right back at you: I hope no one in your home accidentally hurts themselves with the gun(s) in your home, like happens so often every day across this country. I'm sure you say you are safe and that you would never leave a loaded gun out, but so does every "responsible" gun owner. And yet it still happens. All the time. I'm safer not having a gun at home, thanks.

Roger, there was a car-vs.-motorcycles (plural) crash on Foothill near the Tennis Club. I didn't see it, but the car had its driver's side front corner completely smashed in, so it must have been really bad. Multiple ambulances, fire engines, sheriffs & other emergency vehicles had the road completely blocked and it looked like they were bringing victims up from off the roadside. Sorry you didn't hear about it on the scanner, but KEYT sent a camera crew so maybe info will be posted there.

For those advocating shooting coyotes, it's actually illegal as well as being totally wrong. So just know you're online advocating illegal gun activity.

Hermes you are right you don't get it. I don't think you ever will. The right to have arms was created not for hunting but to make sure the people will have the last say if the government turns against us. It's the only thing that protects you and I from tyranny. The founding fathers were very smart men. They saw that in the future this may be needed to keep Americas free. Now do you get it? At the time of flintlocks and muskets they were the most advanced weapons of the day that every military of that time was using. So how can you compare that when we can't have what the military uses now fully automatic rifles? And yes you could even own a cannon back then. But your common man could not afford artillery.

Do you put a sign in front of your house that says "Gun Zone"? I doubt it. :) Barely 1/3 of the population of this country own firearms, yet there are almost 88 guns per 100 people. The burden should instead be on you to announce that you have guns, rather than the opposite. Since I'm the majority. ;)

Hermes the difference between your statements and the other poster is you said " I take offense to PEOPLE that own mass murdering...... " Your statement says you judge people by an object they own. You may not agree with it, and I may not agree with close minded one anger fits all trend riders. Tomorrow you will have another cause that you must uphold. To the op, like others said cell phones or Internet phones don't show addresses. Maybe give the police station a call ( not 911 ) and ask them to verify your address.

I respectfully disagree; I see your point and recognize what you're trying to say, but for the sake of the debate I'll clarify: I don't judge someone for owning a firearm. I disagree with their ownership of a firearm. I might think that firearm ownership is wrong, but anyone who owns one has a very legal right to own one. I may even be offended by someone's firearm ownership. But I don't think of them as a lesser individual or judge them as a bad person because they own one. I have several friends who are gun owners; one of them owns seven or eight guns. We get along great, and I don't think he's a bad person for owning them. It's possible to disagree with something someone does without thinking they are a terrible person or judging them harshly on a single data point. That in and of itself is a huge problem with our current discourse in this country, IMHO.
