Guns Drawn
updated: Mar 01, 2013, 1:30 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Does anyone know what was going on near the County Fire Department on Cathedral Oaks this afternoon? There were Sheriff's with guns drawn.

Another subscriber reports:

"Two County Sheriff vehicles and one CHP vehicle stopping a man in a pick-up truck on Cathedral Oaks with guns drawn. Held up traffic in both directions for some time. Anyone have the scanner reports as to what happened? Lots of yelling to "get down! get down!"

Sounds like another felony traffic stop. Becoming a regular occurrence lately in sunny Santy Barbieland.

I was second in line behind a truck (that was behind the angled stopped police car) when they made that stop. You could tell they weren't going to let any traffic go by at that point so a bunch of us turned around.

Looked very dramatic. I would've stayed to watch but I had a hair appt! First things first...

There has been a lot of robberies lately in the Goleta area and I know of some where the police have a good descriptions. This could have been one of those idiots.

The police were called out on a stabber sighting the other night. Not sure if they got the guy so really can't say much. Probably more robberies than I have heard. I have heard of 6 none in Goleta I don't doubt they are occuring I bet there will be alot this weekend..

I don't know what "robberies" are being referred to in the Goleta area. Unfortunately because robbery and burglary both involve theft (or larceny) there are many who do not understand the difference between "robbery" and "burglary". Robbery is a theft or unlawful taking accomplished from the person or immediate presence of a person by use of force or some means of fear (guns, knives, clubs, brute force or "strong-arm" strength, threats of injury or harm, or assault, ETC.)
Burglary, on the other hand, is the entry of a building or structure (or a LOCKED vehicle), with or without the use of force and whether or not the STRUCTURE is locked or secured, or so called "breaking" is involved in the entry, with the intent to commit any amount of of theft or any other FELONY by the perpetrator, which felonious intent must be present at the time of entry. Hopefully our devoted readers will use these terms correctly.

I am the daughter of the gentleman being handcuffed. I want details because it was my 85 year old father trimming trees on the side of his property. Someone going by said my father was sitting in a parked truck with a rifle on his lap and his finger on the trigger. My father was outside of the vehicle loading the brush when the sheriffs arrived. He had no gun or rifle anywhere. He has been tramatized both physically and emotionally. Making an 85 year old man with severe arthritis get down on his knees. Come on.

Typical SBPD harassment of elderly non-threatening people. They pulled something similar on my parents about 20 years ago. At the time, my dad, who was driving, was about 85 and my mom, riding with him, all 4'10" of her, was nearly 70. The offense? A California stop at an entirely vacant intersection. Not that my dad shouldn't have been pulled over, but to have two SBPD officers draw their weapons on my parents, who never hurt a fly, that is just too much!

Mom ended up getting a letter of apology signed by the then Chief of SBPD.
