Pediatrician

I am currently looking for recommendations for pediatricians in the SB/Goleta area. We are expecting our first child in May. So far we are leaning towards Dr. Patricia Erbe but thought I'd check with the community to get their input.

Erbe is the best. My kids have been with her for many years. (She'll see them into adolescence if you/they wish. I have girls, so that may be a factor there, for the kids at least.) Office can be a bit quirky, but that seems to be true of every medical office these days. The other physicians in the group are all fine and more than capable if/when she's away etc.

My children have Dr. David Abbott for their physician. We moved here when my oldest was 9, and my youngest was 4 months. We now have a baby, and he has suffered from milk allergies as well as acid reflux. He has been wonderful working with us. My oldest is now 14 and has dealt with some pretty heavy issues, and he has been very supportive working with her other physicians. He is very calm and patient, and gives you time to talk about concerns. I've asked some silly questions for having 3 children, he just smiles and answers. They also have a nurse line for questions that are non urgent, always get calls back within a couple of hours. The times I have had to leave messages for him, he has called me back within the day.

Dr. Erbe isn't our primary physician, but we've belonged to that medical office for 14 years, and I'd highly recommend it. We see Dr. Elstner, but have seen Dr. Erbe on occassion, and she has been great. All the doctors are wonderful, and most importantly there is always a doctor available if yours happens to take a day off. They are also available Saturday morning, which is more important than you now realize.

We had to switch to Sansum when my daughter was 4 because of a change in health insurance. At first, we weren't thrilled at having to switch, but Dr. Saida Hamdani turned out to be a great find and advocate for my daughter's health. She was more assertive about getting my daughter referred to specialists for various medical conditions than the private practice (PPO) pediatrician was, which was a great benefit. My daughter continued to see Dr. Hamdani until she went off to college. I recommend her very highly!

I've had very good experiences with Vichai Phungrasamee. [Everyone calls him Dr. Vic. :) ] He's been awesome with my son, and was recommended by my ObGyn. He's in Goleta, off of Paterson, which is very convenient for me.

We really like Dr. Hamdani. I wish there was a naturopathic or alternative medicine doctor who practices pediatrics. I don't know if there are any local pediatricians that won't pressure you to get you to do all of the vaccines. Do lots of research about vaccines (especially the lack of control or monitoring of what may be added to them -- aluminum, etc.) and circumcision (if that applies) and do what you feel is right instead of simply going along with the status quo medical establishment.

Dr. Patricia Erbe, is awesome. She is a great pediatrican, very compassionate and knows a lot. Very good, even going into teenage years.

Most of the drs at Sansum are great. My favorite is (and who all my kids see) is Dr. Gaitan! He's got an awesome bedside manner is great with the kids and the parents and has been a blessing to our family!

Dr Abbott isn't a choice, he is THE choice. I saw him all through childhood after being diagnosed witha medical condition and continued to see him for my issue years after being a kid. To this day I still wish I had a doctor as great as him. Could not recommend a better doctor!

I can't speak highly enough of Dr. Erbe at Santa Barbara Children's Medical Clinic. She is compassionate, highly knowledgeable, and I greatly appreciate that her advice is practical, realistic, and down-to-earth. Our daughter loves to see Dr. Erbe! We've seen Dr. Abbott when Dr. Erbe is out of the office, and would recommend him as well. They're both at SBCMC.

DR. Vic ( Vichai Phungrasamee) Just a great guy. Took our two sons to him for many years. Sharp, easy to work with, spends a lot of time with the patients. Across the street from GVH on Patterson. Easy parking.

Another vote for Dr Vic. He may not be the "best" but he is great with kids and young adults and does not hesitate to refer to a specialist if needed.

Dr. Hamdani!! Was first my pediatrician, now she sees both my kids who have a number of issues between them. I only stay at Sansum because of her. Once she retires, we will be gone.

Another fan of Dr. Erbe! Our family has been fortunate to have her as our pediatrician for over 20 years. Great at every stage from newborn through adolescence. She has handled challenging medical issues in infancy, childhood and the rocky teen years with considerable expertise. My daughter still wants to see her on visits home from college!

I've heard wonderful things about Dr Hamdani, but I've also heard about mostly being seen by nurse practitioners at that office, lengthy delays in returning phone calls, and days to get seen when it's an acute issue. We've been seeing Dr Iris Castaneda-Van Wyk since my daughter's birth 8+ years ago and she's awesome. Independent, she's has very flexible hours, we always get in same day when my daughter's sick, and she's well versed in naturopathy as well as traditional western medicine. My daughter was very ill as an infant and is exceptionally healthy now, so this comes from both sides of the spectrum. She isn't a preferred provider on our current insurance, but we'd pay out of pocket without hesitation.

We have had a great experience with Dr. Laurel Mehler. She is very conscientious and thorough and has done a great job working with our daughter though a complex medical situation. The whole family loves her.

We have always chosen our physicians after soliciting trusted referrals, talking to he/she about their practice style and asking them a few questions about their practice that are important to our family. Our kids are 13,12 and 11. After much deliberation, we chose Dr. Gaitan, which was a terrific choice for our family. A few years later we had to switch pediatricians due to insurance and chose Dr. Margot Roseman, who we couldn't like more. They are both excellent choices.

Dr. Margot Roseman is really great! Very responsive! We have seen several of the docs at Children's Medical Clinic. It is a nice practice. 965-1095

Dr. Iris Castaneda is terrific. As is her father, Dr. Castaneda. No bashing today? Regular Medical doctors, Chiropractors, Dentist get bashed like crazy.

Patti Erbe has been doctor to my three kids since they were born. (18 years!) She has seen us through thick and thin. She is always pleasant, takes whatever time is needed to address the issue and clearly loves the kids she takes care of. As my youngest prepare for college, I became nostalgic while in her office recently -- wondering if it's my last time there! We love her. :)

Dr. Hamdani has been wonderful for us. She spotted a very minor physical delay with my daughter due to nerve damage from a long labor, and immediately got us into two different occupational therapy centers. One of the therapists even said the condition was too minor to warrant therapy, but Dr. Hamdani insisted and helped us get into another therapy center. My daughter is recovering from nerve damage and doing well. We love Dr. Hamdani's calm demeanor, and her attention to detail.

Dr. Patricia Erbe is the best. If she is busy, Children's Medical Clinic 15 E. Arrellaga,Santa Barbara, CA 93101 always has someone on call; it is the best and won't let you worry about the little stuff. They won't over subscribe antibiotics. Our children and grand children have gone there.
