Thanks again to Dan Seibert :-), Mayor Schneider, Santa Barbara View and the Arts Commission. It's ours, like it or hate it, but don't ever let it deteriorate again!

$100 a square foot is such a ridiculous price to pay. More than 10x what the actual cost is of labor and materials. I don't care where the money came from to pay for this. I want to know who is getting the kickback on this sweet deal?

$100/sq ft!! Wow, someone is getting scalped. Cheaper just to sell the thing and be done with it from a community perspective. Any chance of relocating it somewhere else during the process?

Love it or not, the restoration of the Bayer sculpture is a big undertaking. And where did the $100. sq. ft figure come from?

With all the DUI's in SB, why can't someone crash into this thing?

379765 - Estimating the width of each arch at 7" and knowing that it's 21' high, an easy LxWxH calculation gives you approx. 800 sq ft of surface. At a cost of $80,000 that's $100 per sq ft. Even if the width is as much as 12", that would still be over $62 per sq ft, which is outrageous.

Good news! Thanks to the people who spearheaded the project. They are also laying plans for future upkeep. Good news all the way around.

I'm with 787. Except they'd rebuild the thing for $300 sq. ft. Just letting it die doesn't seem to be an option.

And thank goodness that it isn't an option. I'd be sad to see it go. :) Before I moved here I used to spend a lot of time here in the 90s as an adolescent and teenager and definitely built a subconscious association between the Chromatic Gate and Santa Barbara.

It's not just painting, but grinding sanding, etc. if any have lifted a brush you'd know that half the job is prep. Somebody oughta get a tape measure and then check their math.
