Cox Fee Increase
updated: Feb 27, 2013, 9:09 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

Does anyone know what the $8 increase with Cox Cable is for? I went in to pay my bill yesterday and was informed that everyone's bill will be increasing by $8. We can opt out but will have to sign a 2 year contract that we wont change/cancel our service or will be penalized anywhere between $50-100!

You should consider canceling your cable service with them. Or if you still want to keep it. You can get 20% off your monthly bill if you threaten to cancel it. So happy we finally did it. We are now streaming Netflix and HULU through the internet. And have bunny ears for local news. Could not be happier. Just wish we did it sooner.

When is another cable provider (not a dish) going to come in here to compete?! That's the only thing that will drive the prices down. Can we start a petition?

This is what happens when you have a monopoly. If nobody else is in the area to compete (product/service for product/service, meaning that DISHNetwork doesn't count as a comparison) then you can do whatever the heck you want.

And Cox very often does. No competition means they have us over a barrel. Nice, huh?

Until Verizon brings FiOS into the area, Cox will do what they want.

Lakers and inflation.

But if you really want to know, talk to your city representatives. They and they alone sanction the monopoly. In fact they receive a significant amount of kick backs from Cox for the pleasure... Cox has full time employees that do nothing but massage the city and its bureaucrats.

But consider your options. The other cable companies have the worst customer service records in the US. Cox really is a better choice, regardless of the lack of choice.

Free enterprise has one core necessity; Competition. Competition breeds from offering better serices for lesser prices. But there is a limit on how "great" you can serve an ice cream cone. So as long as growth remains paramount, the only way to grow is by buying up competitors. This decreases options and leads to monopoly. Monopoly gives that "sole source" the leverage of charging whatever they want because, if you want it, you have no choice but to pay. Monoplization is the foundation of the cable industry. Nobody ever fights it. A collective protest would drastically alter the format but.... People are too busy watching Dancing with American Idol.

Wish we could get Time Warner in here, just one other option would be nice. My parents and my in-laws have DirecTV and its ok, but I'm not in love with it enough to commit to a 2 year deal as they typically want.

The increase is most likely Lakers related plus something else. I think I read somewhere that the new Lakers deal will result in an average of $3-5 (I don't remember) increase to the average user. We'll likely see something else of the sort in the next year or two for the Dodgers with their new deal that takes effect in 2014. As a huge sports fan I'm fine with it, since I'll actually watch those, but I'd like to be able to offset those costs by dropping the useless channels like Faux News.

I've heard you can contest rate increases and they will not risk losing (another) customer. Or start it in another name so you get the teaser rate for a while.

I reported on the $8 Cox bill increase at Edhat topic "Trouble Accessing Public Channels" [2 Mar 2012]

Re: Equipment
COX (per the City agreement) agreed to do the following: "... In exchange for early [digital] transition, Cox would provide various forms of compensation to the local governments according to each government's needs. *** Cox would also provide affected subscribers _all Equipment_ necessary_ to view the digital PEG access channels_ and install the equipment free of charge." ***

Re: The SERVICE part:
A Cox (store) employee stated (March 2012) that the box was "free" (at that time), BUT = when all of the channels are converted to digital in about a year the service to the box will cost $8.00 a month, added on to my basic Cox payment.

243. An oligopoly has multiple big players in one industry. A monopoly has one. As soon as Time Warner and Comcast get invited to the party of hard wire cable delivery service, then you might have an argument. DirecTV does not function on the same playing field and has several restrictions...... On another note, The Lakers are adding $5 and Cox is pushing that through. Second, be on the lookout for the New Cox Mercedes Vans that are now being implemented to replace the open trucks. Cox is so embarrassed by their moxy that they're removing the famous Mercedes emblems from all the vans.

You miss a lot of first run and live events, but if you can wait you can see most of that stuff for the cost of an internet connection. I pay Verizon $25/mo to be able to stream low-def TV programs. If I could find a hi speed internet connection that didn't involve cox I would get that and switch to Netflix instead of using blockbuster.

I can watch NFL games through my laptop.

Not missing much as far as I can tell.

It's a monopoly that is sanctioned by the city -- they were paid off as part of the deal. That's why we don't have FiOS fiber optic internet service. I don't know when this monopoly will end.

I tried DISH satellite, but they kept raising prices also. Now I have an antenna, one time cost of about $150 to buy the antenna and digital converter pole, clamps, and wire. I get four KCET channels, two NBC, two ABC, and three KOCE (PBS) channels. They are all digital. The main ones come in at 720p or 1080p digital, older reruns are at 480p.

People, There is no such thing as Direct competition when it comes to regular cable tv service. In every city across the us the local cable companies own the lines that they transmit there programming on. There is no way another company is going to set up there own lines and broadcast. It is virtually and financially impossible. Cox Communications does have competition, DirecTV, & Dish Network. Those are your choices here in Santa Barbara. If you want a different Cable TV provider besides satellite you could move to LA and Get Time Warner or move to Lompoc and get Comcast. All of your cable companies lease the space from the power company to run their lines on their poles. Everyone is upgrading to fiber and these things cost money. If you don't like how much you are paying for TV then don't subscribe to the service.

BTW don't tell me i don't know what i am talking about I have been in this industry for 10 years.

I called to cancel my subscription a couple of days ago but they hooked me back in with discounts and a 'lock' on my current rate. There is some sort of obligation that goes with the lock that I'm not yet familiar with. I have to decide before I pay my next bill. The rate increase is primarily due to the Laker channel lease whether or not you choose to watch it.

If you get actual paper bills from them then you would have seen a statement they sent out 2 months ago that stated they were going to raise their rates due to recent lease, carrier and transmission increases from their vendors. Their rates are high but there are other companies out there that charge more. I pay $136 a month for pretty much everything TV related. A friend of mine who lives in metro IL pays $185 for the same services. She has a choice between 3 cable companies there and chose the cheapest (none of them are COX btw). It is what it is. I'll call them and "negotiate" when I get my next bill - they always give you a better deal and you can usually stay with it for a while. I like TV...I am willing to pay for it. If you don't like it, don't look at it - Cox's situation will keep rolling.

@419 - they allow it because cable is a de facto utility. Your water bill is a monopoly. Your gas and electric are monopolies. Any product that requires expensive build out to your house can only make financial sense as a monopoly.

COMMENT 379494P agree helpful negative off topic

2013-02-27 03:13 PM

Cable, gas, electric are utilities that we do not allow to have competition. States such as Texas do allow electric competition and therefore have lower rates as various companies compete for the individuals business. All of the competitors use the same electric lines. They did not have to build out separate power lines. Our government could allow competition among utilities such as cable, electric, etc. but refuses to do so. These are the government representatives we continue to elect.

Write to your legislators and tell them we want a la carte TV channels. When Cox's fees go up, ours go way up. We never watch sports (other than the Olympics), nor shopping, nor Spanish, but those constitute half of the "basic" channels we get. The whole industry needs changing, and unbundling is the first step to get there.

COX used to be a decent company years ago. It has since become the worst example of how a monopoly can unresonably increase costs by 1,000 % while running down services to miserable levels because there are few, if any, real choices and alternatives. They have a virtual license to rip-off the public and ignore the quality of service.Their franchise should have been revoked and the door opened to other full service providers!
