Ham Radio Supply
updated: Feb 26, 2013, 10:03 AM
I'm new to the area and need to replace my obsolete and malfunctioning dual band handheld, preferably
with something APRS compatible - is there a ham radio supply store anywhere in town?

Ahhh... Nope on Radio Shack. Contact the local Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, they know where all the good stuff can be found. Also, welcome to the area! There are a lot of Amateur Radio folks around here.

OP here, thanks for the leads on HRO and SBARC. Trying to decide between VX8-DR or TH-D7 in case you have any suggestions!

Vx-8 also gives you 220 capability. We have two great 220 repeaters here.

SB is the bane of pretty much anyone with a propensity for masculine hobbies (who isn't otherwise rich), so good luck finding anything local!

You also might have fun perusing Marvac. Marvac is a great local store frequented by electronics buffs.

Thanks John - I was a frequent shopper at Marvac in Costa Mesa, I had no idea they had a store here in SB!

Afraid the days of REAL electronics stores in SB are long gone. Do a lot of Internet searching and asking others about gear and when you know what you want order from the Internet or phone for the best prices. Ham Radio Outlet in Sunnyvale seems on the ball and selling a lot of gear that they ship to people.

Marvac doesn't sell ham gear. HRO Burbank is a LOT closer than Sunnyvale, and will have anything you want here the next day. Radio Shack is and has been worthless for years. Stop in to Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings located at the Red Cross office at Alamar and State. Very active club and people would love to help out. Talk to Dave (K6HWN) and he'll show you around. They have a large club radio station there.

I know of some Midland ready rescue handhelds that may or may not be for sale. Friend of my mom. I can check if he's ready to sell them. ?

351, Thanks, the Midland VHF radios are solid, but for me (OP) I'm looking for on-board GPS and APRS interface capability. Admittedly a lot more expensive but that is where I'm headed....

Well, thank you for such a kind remark. I am not trying to buffalo anyone. I don't know that much about them other than they are not in use. You and your kind are one of the reasons that I rarely comment on Edhat anymore.

@408: Then why did you now? "You and your kind" is kind of a stereotypic p.o.s. remark, don't you think? Now if it was 1972, maybe those CB radios might be of some use, but today, they are junk. Now STFU and go away.
