Does anyone know if there is a place in Goleta that sells 99 percent rubbing
alcohol?

CVS. Walgreens.Rite Aid. Grocery stores. Look for the brand name Swans, which is usually a 99% formulation. 99% is usually the most common form of isopropryl alcohol.

378611 - Is that party at the old-age home? Unless you are mid-40s or older you wouldn't even know who Kitty Dukakis is let alone know about her and rubbing alcohol.

600: Actually, 70% seems to be all you can find easily any more. I was in Rite Aid (Fairview center) a few days ago, and all they had was 70%. Grocery stores commonly only have 70%. A few years ago I could find it more easily, but not so much anymore. Admittedly, I don't remember to look each place I go that carries rubbing alcohol. I do know I've found it previously at the Turnpike CVS, but it was a while ago, so that's not saying they still carry it. The other stuff doesn't work as well for cleaning.

Typically isopropyl alcohol is about 90%... 99% is extremely rare. I wonder if the 99% would be found for professional applications like furniture refinishing.

Agree with 626 about the percentage, from my experience, but on line, it's easy to get the stronger stuff. I only have hydrogen peroxide at home at this time. I use rubbing alcohol on a chronic skin condition, not for hash.

Marvak Electronics, Magnolia Shopping Center, by Ralph's. They're now in the back of the center on the right. CVS usually stocks 90%, also has 100% acetone. I got an old bottle of 99% reagent grade isopropyl with a Longs label at a yard sale recently - surprised they ever sold that high purity.

I haven't looked in about six months, but Vons was 'recently' carrying 99% IPA.

You can denatured alcohol at Lowe's and other hardware stores. It is used as a campstove fuel.

Okay, I gotta ask--why do you specifically need 99% alcohol? I just looked at the label of my ancient bottle of rubbing alcohol from Longs and the alcohol percentage isn't even listed. Trivia fact: in England you can buy codeine over the counter, but you can't buy rubbing alcohol. It was explained to me that people might be tempted to drink rubbing alcohol. I guess people who would eat blood pudding would drink anything.

617, I'm 28 and I know full well who Kitty Dukakis is. I also know it's a cheap joke, considering the person here was asking a legit question and got comments insinuating they are an alcoholic. :(

Do you mean completely de-natured alcohol which is used to fuel a burner? They have this at Smart &Final

Completely denatured is a lower percentage. Slightly denatured is the higher percentage (less methyl alcohol in the mixture with ethanol). The ethyl makes it poisonous to drink.

70% is common because it isn't flammable. 90% is available, but is harder to find because it is flammable. I've never seen 99% in a store anywhere. If it has to be 99% you may have to order it from a laboratory supplier.

Close but backwards, 378661. Denatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol (the moonshine type) made poisonous by adding methyl alcohol (typ) and trace other compounds. Methyl alcohol makes you blind or worse, and is best avoided. I bought some 99% isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) about a year ago, I think at Walgreens. It's better for cleaning optics, drys well and you can always add a bit of water if using for skin or rubbing alcohol. FYI, 70% isopropyl alcohol/water is a better antiseptic than the higher concentrations.

My old bottle of 99% Alcohol (isopropyl rubbing alcohol), that I use for cleaning, was purchased at Vons [Vons brand]. There is an 'EXP1203' on the front label = probably telling me that the contents expired in December 2003? Still works fine.

Ethanol, the kind of alcohol in booze, has two carbon atoms. Isopropanol, or isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol, has three carbons. An alcohol has a carbon atom replaced by -OH. It's a class of chemical. Denaturing means adding chemicals to ethanol so that it's not drinkable. The word doesn't apply to rubbing alcohol. Marvak Electronics for 99% isopropanol.

Everclear is sold on VAFB and delicious! I've found 90% at the $.99 store a while back, but notice recently purchased 70% at Albertsons. What about Kmart? If you're needing it to clean, you could try the smoke shop for various chemicals that clean tar and should get any goop you need off of things.
